Kent, I agree that Kevin Schwantz is one of the top guys from the history of Motorcycle GP racing, from the old days to now.
But, your column about what is a current legal issue with Schwantz and the race teams/promoters/whoever, is very one-sided, and also, filled with rumors and assumptions, I'm kind of surprised that your legal guys (from the magazine) let you print it. And as you said, it's business, whether he is legendary, had his number retired, is one of the good guys, and besides being a pretty nice guy, none of that matters. The one with the best lawyer/most money, is the one that is going to win.
In my opinion, and it means nothing really, trying to play legal advocate in a motorcycle magazine probably isn't the best use of space. You aren't going to sway anyone in a position to help with this article.

My column "Wheelspin" is basically an editorial opinion, and as such, it can be as one-sided as I see fit.
The column obviously wasn't intended to "sway anyone in a position to help" Schwantz; the situation will play itself out one way or another, I was only voicing an opinion on it. And as you noted, I did state that business is business, and if you don't have your legal bases covered, you'll inevitably encounter situations like Schwantz's. But the major point of the article (reinforced by the pull quote splashed across the bottom) was Dorna turning its back on Schwantz after his tireless efforts at promoting the sport.
BTW, not sure where you find the "rumors and assumptions"; all the lawsuit statements are there for public reading, and the Tavo Hellmund/COTA legal wranglings (as well as their wranglings with Ecclestone) were all well-documented in the automotive and Austin press.

As far as I'm concerned, Schwantz can do no wrong. In retirement he is an amabassador for the sport. I took his two day class at Barber and was able to talk an dine and ride with him and I met his parents too; great BBQ cooks, BTW. Wonderful people. He doesn't have to teach people like me but he does it out of love for the sport. His dedication to Texas is real too. The man gives because it makes him feel good. That trait, unfortunately, makes him a mark. That's how I read it.

The best way for everyone that thinks Schwantz has been wronged is to not attend the race. Vote with your wallet. Spend your money elsewhere.

Well said, Guys. I will be in Houston before the event & was going to go to Austin to attend the races, but will now stay away. If enough people show their displeasure, maybe the Fat Cats would sit up & take notice. But I fear we are in the minority. Ride Safe & Friendly, Dr. Rahi.
