Hello SR Experts,

So I'm a completely new rider, haven't ever been on a motorcycle, have yet to purchase a motorcycle but had a few questions regarding an appropriate sized bike for my height \ weight.

I'm 6'1 250lbs, is a Ninja 250R or a CBR 250 going to be sufficient for me or should I start with something a little larger? I want to learn on a bike well suited for a beginner and focus on learning the essentials and building my riding skill before moving on to a more advanced bike. I will be taking the MSF course hopefully soon but wanted to have a foundation of what I should be looking for as a new rider.

I've found loads of conflicting answers on the net to the above question and just wanted to make sure I'm looking for the right type of bike. I'm wanting to start with a sports bike and hopefully evolve to a GSXR-1000 in the future.

Can anyone suggest any decent beginner bikes for my height \ weight and is it inevitable I'm going to want something with more power the second I buy a bike?

Thanks ahead of time for any help you're able to provide me with in this area.

-DG.

There's a nice list of good beginner bikes in http://forums.sportrider.com/70/591801/new-riders/new-riders-please-read-this-updated/index.html

For your weight, a 250 might not be ideal. I'd suggest an sporty upright 500-600cc bike (early 90s sport bike, standard bike). Think SV650, ZZR, YZF600, etc... I would NOT go for a new bike (you will drop it at least once), a race-replica (uncomfortable, difficult to learn on due to seating), or a modern supersport (too much power).

While you should avoid lots of shiny, financed plastic for your new ride, get something you'll like for its own merits fr several years- I don't know of anyone who has "outgrown" a 500-600cc bike for street riding, including racers.
