Hi,

My husband is turning 40 January 1st, and I'm looking to get him a great gift. He rides a kawasaki zrx and mentioned he'd like to go to a track class/camp/something.  I think he wants to learn how to race on a track.  I looked at a bunch of the links for camps on this site, but wanted some input from actual people.  There were two that had camps in Vegas (California Superbike and Miller Motorsports Park), but they were really pricy.  They are kind of what I'm looking for.  We live in Western NY, so anywhere is far, and I'd like to have travel arranged too.  HAs anyone attended any classes/camps?  Would a one day class be worth it?  Any thoughts or recommendations?  Thank you all.

The California Superbike School has dates at New Jersey Motorsports Park, which isn't that far from your location.

You don't have to go that far after all! I live in Erie,Pa., I'm not sure how far that is from you. I help out as a control rider with Moto Series Track days and Road Racing. (formally known as Fasttrax)They run @ Beaver Run and Nelson Ledges both 2 hrs away from me.They were and still are a club that has an easy family atmosphere with good folks and instructors, for everyone from the beginner that just wants to improve their skills to taking the race school. They also have sprint and endurance racing for the racers.(and are very reasonable as well!)  The 2012 schedules should be up on their site in January some time. I hope to see you there! I'll be the old guy on a 98 Bandit,Dan

An on track school is an excellent gift and an even better idea - in terms of reducing the risks of your husband's motorcycle riding in general.

Such schools can improve anyone's skillset, no matter how good they are. Even pro racers learn from people who make their living teaching others how to ride.  They have to conceptualize and articulate all of what goes into riding a motorcycle; that requires thinking about things that those who just ride or just race may never think about.

Moto Series Track days and Road racing has their 2012 schedule up.And they have two more tracks added to their schedule for 2012! Putnam in Aug,but they may not have a instructional group on Sat. Just a open practice day on Sat.(forget the date, but it is on their site)and sprints and endurance on Sunday.
And Gratton in Oct. Gratton may be sketchy in Oct.,maybe the global warming will help us out. I've always wanted to try out Gratton, I'll take the chance,it was in the 50's and raining the last 2011 date I went to @ Nelson Ledges. We had 1 to 2 riders per instructor, and everyone left with smiles. And I believe Gratton has new pavement too!
The economy hasn't been helping me out much, being in the construction trades. But I sure would like to make a trip to Jennings this winter.I'll have to wait and see how that one will play out.  Dan
