So I put money down for a shop to order my size in a nolan helmet. The casey stoner replica.  I'm new to sport bikes and dont know he is, but the helmet looks cool. At a different shop, a guy was showing me some shoei helmets. I started getting worried that I ordered an inferior helmet at the other shop. Did I? The nolan was $220 and the shoeis were about $500. What are you paying for with twice the price? Thanks.

Inferior as far as actual protection, for the most part, no; the Nolans all pass the ECE 2205 standard, which is a decent standard (but not the end-all).

Much of the price depends on the particular model helmet. Most of the higher-end helmets from the name brand manufacturers have numerous detail differences (fit, finish, venting, aerodynamics, shield action/retention, etc.) that make for a better long-term experience. Then there is the exchange rate differences between the Euro (Nolan) and the Japanese yen (Shoei); the Euro has enjoyed a much better exchange rate that allowed European manufacturers to sell their products for comparatively less. And finally, the more popular helmet manufacturers (such as Shoei) have had to battle decades of constant frivolous lawsuits in the US by ambulance-chasing attorneys looking for what they think are deep pockets to try and dip into. We've heard that companies such as Shoei and Arai absolutely refuse to reach any settlement with these frivolous lawsuits (which is what the ambulance chasers hope for) other than full exoneration, thus forcing them to spend huge amounts in their own attorney fees to defend themselves in court.

Thanks for the reply Kento. So in a crash, neither one will be safer, but the shoei might make for a more enjoyable ride? If thats the case, ill see how I like the nolan, and if I hate it ill spend for the shoei. Hopefully I'll like thee nolan though.
