I am brand new to motorcylcing, I do ride bicycles and consider myself athletic and coordinated. I am 34 years old 5-7 145 pounds. But this will be my first motorcylce. I am leaning towards the Ninja 250 R because from what I have read this is a great bike to learn on and not get myself killed. I would appreciate any advice.

An excellent first choice. Be sure to look for our 250 comparison in the May issue due on newsstands any day now.

Firstly- If you havn't already done so, I highly reccomend the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's "Basic Rider Course". For $160.00 you learn everything about basic operation of a motorcycle and can get your endorsement, which is a far sight better than hoping your bicyclng and coordination alone will keep you safe.  [friendly suggestion]

Now then-
I own a 2010 Ninja 250r and can honestly say it is a great bike for any rider, regardless of experience level.  It handles very well, can keep up with traffic and you build a ton of confidence on it very quickly.

I put over 2000 miles on it last summer as it was my commuter to and from work mostly, excellent gas savings. The only real problem with it is at highway speeds 55-65 mph, it can be difficult to get enough extra power out of the engine to pass things like... a semi truck and trailer.  Which I personally dont like being stuck behind for a very long time (sand and sheering wind)

Pros:
- Easy to handle size with sportbike looks
- Amazing Gas mileage (and a fuel gauge)
- Perfect for smaller riders (my sister is 5'6" and 120 lbs and she fits on it perfectly, however I am 6' and 220 lbs and I fit ok too)
- Comfortable riding position and a lower seat height to build confidence.

Cons:
- Lacking some power
- Tires are too narrow for my liking (the whole bike is pretty slim)

Something to consider would be a bike like a Yamaha FZ6R, 600cc engine that is still very manageable, with sporty looks and a nice seating position.  Goodluck, have fun and stay safe.
