Hello fellow and female Sport Bike riders. I am writing to address these fools who must feel that to wave at other bikes while trying to stay alive is a foolish habit. I do no wave and I imagine it must be some form of glee club issue. Keep you hands on your clip ons and ignore the wavibies. Do cars wave at each other? Nope wo why should we. Currently ride a 08 Kawa ZX10R and consider it the last of the non ABS and the other doodad accs to help us ride better. If you can't do it without all the bells and whistles then get a Honda Mini Trail. Ride safe and just say no to the wave!

I wave when I am able to. When I am in a turn or series of turns,I do not wave. I have more important things to do at the moment.

I've never understood this either. Why would you purposely take your hand of the bar and your eyes off the road. I've waved in the past if someone goes out of their way to wave first, but you've inspired me to stop this nonsense. I'll save my hellos for when I'm refueling.

I wave when waved to. Personally, I think it's rude not to wave back. If someone says hello to you, why wouldn't you say hello back? It gives me a sense of camaraderie.

I try to return the greeting when waved to, but I don't look at this whole thing as some life or death situation. I don't need to take my eyes off the road to do it; peripheral vision works fine, and as long as I'm not directly surrounded by traffic, I don't see extending a hand in greeting as some sort of critical safety hazard. I don't make it a point to wave to every single motorcyclist that passes by, but if I happen to pass one on a lonely road, sometimes I'll extend a greeting without expecting any in return; we're still a very small minority in comparison to all the automobiles out there, so yes, you'd hope there is some camaraderie there. If the other rider isn't feeling it, no drama, it's a free country. But I see no reason to turn it into some sort of contentious argument that requires insults. Much ado about nothing, really.

I agree that an argument over this is not necessary as we are all free to do what we want (wave or not wave). I think we all agree though, that waving while riding in heavy traffic is not a good idea. And to Kento1’s point, a wave to a single rider on a deserted road is not really a danger either. But my experience has been that people wave in all sorts of situations - in heavy traffic, riding in groups, riding through turns and riding in inclement weather. I think what the first guy was saying, albeit in a very colorful way, is that waving can develop a foolish habit, and that it is better to keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the bars and stay focused on what you are doing. There is no reason to add an extra distraction to your riding that is not necessary. I think this is good advice and something we should all think about.

Holy cow! the ZX-10 is a monster! Can understand why you don't wave.

Why? I get waves on the scooter from Harley guys. Then again it's a small town. At least nod to let them know that we face the same danger as anything motor with two wheels.

I am new to owning a bike, but have been a fan for some time. It seems like something that if you want to do/it is safe, then do it. If you dont want to, or feel it is unsafe for your situation, then dont.
Some cars do wave to each other. People who drive Jeep Wranglers have a wave. Some Corvette owners wave (although not as common as the jeep wave). Its a little different, but boaters/jet skiers also wave.
My take on it is sort of an acknowledgement that you love what you are doing, and understand why others ride too. People are proud to ride their motorcycles, especially the American made ones, so they show it. I dig it. I just started riding so I doubt I will be paying attention to other people. I also doubt other people take offense if you dont wave back.

I got a lesson from waving my hands at great speed.... I completely remove my hand from clutch and waving my buddies in car and suddenly one of them can very near to me... they where just playing with me and I lost controls and 4 teeths and a broken jaw... and a broken ankle and landed in hospital for 15 days... nothing can go worst than this!!!
