Tire issues

i recently started riding again afetr a 2 year lapse. before i stopped i replaced my rear tire. my front was junk so i installed a new one as soon as i started riding again. from what i have been told you should not mix tire brands. however i did. i am limited to front tires due to the age and make of my bike. now i am getting an odd feeling when cornering as well as going straight. wierd feeling as in as i commit to a lean it feels like the bike wants to lean more. i have tried differnet air pressure in the front and rear tires and nothing seems to help. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Almost sure to be an issue with the different front and rear tires. If the profiles aren't matched, you'll get weird steering characteristics just like you've described. Changing pressure most likely won't help much. What bike is it and what tires are you using?

michelin pilot on the rear and bridgestone BT016 on the front. it is on a 1995 honda cbr900rr. the reason i mis matched the tires is because it has a 16" front wheel. didnt realize i couldnt get a michelin in that size when i bought the rear.

Could it be tipping in more easily because the new tyre no longer has a flat section on it from commuting type riding, and now wants to tip in as it really should?

That could be a possibility, but I think more likely that those two tires don't match. You could try raising the front end a few mm by sliding the fork tubes down in the triple clamps (if there is room), and that will make it not tip in so easy. Otherwise it's probably best to get a matching rear tire.

You can solve all your handling issues by locating and purchasing a front wheel from a 93-96 CBR600, its a 17inch, it does require having spacers made at a machine shop in order center the wheel/rotor mating, cost about $20. The biggest problem is finding a front wheel, everybody who owns a CBR900rr has bought them all up,but I'm sure if you look hard enough, youll find one. But, be prepared to pay a least $200 for a straight rim in execelent cond. If you do locate a rim,I can provide you the required info on the swap and spacer requirments. Another very good reason to do this, is the fact that there are almost no 16" tires available anymore, the last time I was able to locate a 16", it took me almost 18mos. to find them anywhere. Finaly found last remaining Metzler 16"/18" combo for my zx900 in Canada, took 4mos. to get them. You can contact me a calvin.taylor50@yahoo.com
