Hi all..

I was going by the suggested suspension settings on here for my 2005 Yamaha YZF-R1 and I noticed something odd and I was hoping for some clarification...

Here is the link I was looking at:
http://www.sportrider.com/suspension_settings/146_suggested_suspension_settings/yamaha.html

On the rear rebound suspension settings it says to set it at 26 clicks out from full stiff.  However, the owners & service manual lists the stock setting at 17 clicks out, but it says a max of 20 clicks out from full stiff.  It also warns not to go past the maximum amount of clicks.

So, it it a typo in the Sport Rider settings online?  I don't know what to do.  Should I set it at 17 and leave it or try and see if the clicker will actually go to 26, which I would imagine would be full soft actually.  It just makes me really nervous to make it 6 clicks past the factory max setting.

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mat

At the time we were looking for full soft on the rebound, as that generation of R1 has a tendency to pack down on the rear end. You definitely don't want to force the clicker out farther than it will go, just lightly turn it out until you feel some resistance, then go back in to the nearest click. For some reason, our test bike maxed out at 26 clicks, which was a lot more than the manual indicated.

Generally, the adjusters don't gradually tighten up like a normal screw. It will be very easy to turn, then just stop, so you'll feel right away when you're at the end of the adjustment.

AT,

Thanks a bunch.  I was just about to post that it went to 26 clicks with no problems, so that's what I set it at.     The manual does say 20, but I just kept going to see if it would go to 26 and it did, so that's where I left it.  LOL

But I appreciate you getting back to me on the post.

I put the bike at your settings and it feels MUCH better.  Plus, the previous owner set the fork tubes 25mm (almost 1") above the triple clamps.  Not sure why they did so much, but they did.     So, I put all the settings at your settings listed at the link above and put the forks back at flush with the top of the fork and the top of the triple clamp.  That's what you guys indicated and, ironically, is the stock setting.

The bike feels MUCH, MUCH better now.  I'll still get the final settings dialed in at the track and such, but at least you guys give a great starting point.  Thank you!
