Need some bike advice

Well, I'm new to the forum. I have been riding dirt bikes since I was 7. Just for fun until last year when I could just drive to tracks. I rode tracks all last year and held my own. I'm not throwin' down whips, but I do most of the jumps and such. Anywho, to get back on topic, I've wanted a streetbike for as long as I can remember. Now a buddy of mine just picked up a 09' cbr600rr. He was into harescrambles and such and is amazing on a dirt bike. So I believe he'd be alright on the cbr. Now my question, I know no one would know for sure but being as I never rode a streetbike before, do you guys think I am ready for a zx6r. I would like to take a loan out and get a bike for the summer. I'm 18, 5'9, and only about 135 pounds. That's my only worry here. I know I would be able to handle the bike itself, obviously in time I'd do a little more risky things, but right from the start I'd take it slow. So as of now I'm just looking for a 09' left over of a zx6r in local shops, and saving money. Thanks for your time, hope to hear your opinion...

If you can borrow the bike, take a MSF advanced rider course with it. The instructor will watch you ride and assess your skills. Ask your instructor if the bike is suitable for you after you take the course and see what they say.

I agree with Oldandslow. The advance course is really well tought and it would be an opportunity to see if the CBR is a match. I have ridden both and prefer the Kawi. But I am also a bit bigger (fatter) than you. 5'10'' 195. Okay, 200 damnit. Don't know how you are on the Yamahas, but I have come to really like the R6 as well. Torquey!!! Good Luck!

I don't know if you are aware or not, but SPEED TV is doing a test ride of the Kawasaki ZX6-R at like 10pm on Sunday 3/2/10.

Very cool that you are wanting to start riding a sport bike, my recommendation would actually be that you try to get a used Kawasaki or Yamaha or whatever you can find cheaply because even though you have been riding dirt bikes all your life still is a chance that you might go down ,heaven forbid, or drop in the garage not saying anything against you at all but still, also in my opinion i say go for 600cc but get an older model that is still carbureted , at least with my bikes the fuel-injected is way the heck more torquey and higher chance of surprising you anyways just a thought. Ride safe.
