I would like to get my hands on a retired AMA superbike or supersport bike. I know they sometimes get to the public, but how could someone get one of the retired bikes?

They are usually sold off by the race teams at the end of the season. If the race team has contact information on a website, you could probably inquire with them about it that way.

do you know of anyone who has gone through the process? i ask b/c i wonder how much of a headache it is to get one. i would think that they either pull off a bunch of the gofast goodies, or you have to sign some sort of legal agreement about some of the parts.

The thing is, all the older supersport and superbike machinery from earlier years has surely been sold off already, and the AMA rules this year are much more strict with regards to modifications. The superbikes are more of a "superstock" style machine now, with less of the really trick pieces on them (for instance, stock wheels, stock suspension externals are required). So there's not really a whole lot of really trick parts to take off. Mostly datalogging equipment and the like will be the only parts that are taken off. Everything else will be as is.
Again, I would inquire with a race team about it to find out. I have seen many older ones in private hands.
