I ride a 2001 zrx R1200. The stock tire size for rear is 180/55 ZR17.
Can I safley use a bigger .....180/70/R16? Thanks much. What is the differance in these two sizes? Steve

Besides the obvious tire diameter difference that will require an aftermarket rim ($$), you will run into profile differences (not related to the fact that a 180/70 series tire is totally different than a 180/55) that will most likely cause handling issues, regardless of whether you match the front with the same brand/model.
If you can find a 190/50 series tire that the manufacturer says can run on a 5.5-inch rear rim and match it with a same brand/model front tire, that would be a better course of action.
