I'm 20 years old, I'm 5'9'' 145-150ish... I've been interested in bikes since I was in Jr high... and I always knew I would get one but I didn't know when, I have a good paying job now, I'm not attending college at the moment because I'm relocating. But I want to know... What is a good bike choice for me as a beginner... I really don't know much about bikes... I have a neighbor who said he will help me ride and he's been riding sports bikes for awhile... but with my build what would fit me best? I really love the shape and lines of the Yamaha R6. New or old... really don't matter to me. Do you guys think this could be a good coice? I know alot of people are not for 600cc for beginners, but I drive my 2007 HHr like a granny... I respect people around me because of past experiences... so I will drive the sports bike like It's worth a million dollars...

For a beginning rider, the Yamaha R6 isn't the best choice. It's got a very peaky powerband, which will be difficult for a beginner to get accustomed to, especially as he learns the skill of throttle/clutch manipulation to take off from a stop.
Also, with all due respect to your friend who's been riding sportbikes for a while, it's highly recommended that you enroll in the nearest MSF course to understand and reinforce the correct riding habits. We've seen way too many riders who have a difficult time getting over bad habits that have been ingrained into their riding over years of repetition.
Please read the new rider sticky to get a good idea of where to start and what to do as you gain entry into the sport. Done right, it can provide you with years of great enjoyment with far less of the pitfalls that have swallowed up many well-intentioned novices.
