I currently ride a 2005 yamaha yzf 600R and am considering buying a 2002 vfr 800 and selling the yamaha. My question is how much (if any) upgrade in performance would the vfr be? Specs in the quarter mile seem to be about the same and i read the vfr only makes about 10 more horsepower while weighting 70 or 80 pounds more than the 600R. i am a tall rider at 6'5 and nearly 40 years old so i'm not looking for the small race ready bikes. Just want a little bit more than the 600R is giving me. Would a VFR give me any extra thrills?

A couple of my riding buddies have had VFRs over the past few years. I'm not sure you'll see any difference in power from your YZF600R because it is quite a bit heavier (558 lbs wet), but the raves come from its buttery-smooth V4 motor and ride. Good long distance sport bike without resorting to something big like an FJR1300. It has a reputation for getting very hot though.
If you want extra thrills but not a race replica machine, you'll probably have to look elsewhere. A used FZ1 might be a good choice if you don't mind a half-naked bike (although you can purchase fairings for it).

I bought a 99 YZF for the better half and I love to take her bike out for a rip now and then. My mate has a 99 VFR and I can toast his butt no problem on the hiway, and especially in the twisties. I too am 6'5 " 280 and 45 y/o. My choice for something that I can sport tour on and have a lot of fun with? An 07 Apriia Tuono that I have managed to put 24K KM on in just over a year. That includes the Alberta winter and a badly fractured finger (9 screws to hold it together) last fall. Try taking a Tuono for a rip. Methinks that you won't be disappointed.
