1st bike - GS500F vs. Katana600

My buddy has a GSXR750 that looks sweet and he was going to sell it to me, but then I read the main posts on this site and decided to start with a 500 or 600cc bike. I am scheduled to take the MSF class in September - it was the next open weekend session.

I am 6'2", about 160 pounds and am looking at getting either a GS500F or an early 2000's Katana 600 or Honda CBE 600 F4i

I would appreciate opinions on these bikes to help me decide.
