As long as you have motorcycle specific oil all is well at that point it comes down to personal choice. I use use maxima racing oils because they make everything and i can carry the theme through the whole bike such as brake fluid, coolant, oil gease, ect. As far as the service manual they are generic like a car saying safe anywhere from 5/50 to 20/20. For cali weather i think the sweet spot is 10/40. These numbers are the vescosity. The first number is the cold rating and the lower the better it works in colder climates. second number is the high side and the higher it is the better it works in a hotter climate. So understanding this 5/50 would be the most complete protection. best bet is to use 10/40 syn or conv.

Dude! I just rode my bike after I changed my oil to AMSOIL MCF...100% synthetic 10w-40...And I cannot tell you what a difference it seems to have made! She shifts so much smoother, and  swear she vibrates less. The bike has better throttle response, starts quicker and just seems to run better! Now I can't say that any other synthetic oil won't give the same results...but I'm sold! From now on it going to be 100% synthetic (AMSOIL)!!
