Okay, so im 18 and ive been riding dirt bikes for about 10 years and riding is my life. A friend of mine just sold me a 96 suzuki bandit 600s with only 9000 miles on it REALLY cheap its my first road bike , he said his mechanic got it running but there is rust in the tank. What can I do to fix it, just flush the whole system? I plan on going through the basics of the bike, filters, fluids, plugs etc but im thinking im going to have to mess with the carbs and I cant really find much info on that. Anybody help me out?

Wellll...First of all, I wouldn't run the bike until you've got the rust issue resolved. And I'd drain the carb bowls right now. Most likely, you'll need to remove the fuel tank and flush it with lots of water, until there's no more loose rust in there. Then after it dries out, inspect the tank for signs of serious rust. If it's rusted real bad-there are kits available to coat the inside of the tank. If I remember right one is made by PJ1...It's a multi step process and it works. I had an old bike once that had rust so bad that it leaked. The PJ1 kit sealed it for a while, but I eventually had to have the tank welded. Hopefully yours isn't so bad....If it's not rusted too bad (just a little surface rust inside and funky stale gas) just keep it full of gas. Of course you could buy a new tank...In any case a new fuel filter is a given. And maybe an extra in-line filter until things get cleared up. Good luck! I'll keep an eye on your post and if I can add anything I will.

Yeah we for sure didnt plan on running it until we got the tank taken care of, but my dad said something about the PJ1 and how its worked for him so im going to have to look around for it! When I went and looked at the bike the other day the tank didnt look bad AT ALL so im thinking just flushing it would be alright, but we are going to coat it anyways. Thanks for the help! I will keep you updated once we pick the bike up next week
