definetly take the MSF course also read through the rider skills articles on this site there is a section for new riders, tons of useful info and even more than you will get at the MSF course. As far as insurance goes you'll just have to start getting some quotes and trust me shop around you might be surprised at how much polices can differ between agencies, there are too many variables for someone to just give you a figure of the top of their head, rates differ between states also some agencies give discounts for various reasons multicar etc. also some agencies may give a discount for having taken the MSF course i think that may also vary by state.

I don't have any experience with the SV650, but I hear nothing but good things from everyone. That would probably be a good starter. At your age, insurance can kill you even with a clean record, so like 0069 said, shop around and see what's available. Every company does something different in every state so it's a bit messy.
Are you signed up for the MSF course yet because this time of year there is usually a decent waiting list? Good luck with the course and shopping for a new bike. That's definitely a fun time! Drop back and let us know what you decide on.

Hey man,
I own an 07 sv650s. So if you have any specific questions about it, ask away.
This is my first bike. I am 23, bout 160 lbs and living in Southern California. I commute with this bike, I already have about 7K miles on it.
Let me tell you first off, I love this bike. Everything good everyone is saying about it is absolutely true.
It handles great, has plenty of zip yet still quite fuel efficient ( I average about 60 mpg ). It's a very good price for a very nice bike. I think it's a great starter bike that will keep you satisfied for years to come.
Like any other bike, careful with the throttle until you get used to it, it's not terribly sensitive but it will get you going for sure.
I called about 6 different insurance companies and AAA was the cheapest FOR ME. I almost didn't believe them and figured something screwy was up, because they were beating everyone else by hundreds if not thousands of dollars. I asked them on the phone how they could be so much cheaper and they said that it's because they are a government company. So be sure to get a quote from them. I am paying about $450 a year for full coverage with a $250 deductible.
Like I said, if you have any more questions on it, post back. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with this bike. I get compliments ALL the time at the gas station and even while on the road/freeway. I didn't even have to pay the 12K for a fancy liter bike but I feel like I'm being treated just as well, lol.
However... I believe a liter bike will be in my future somewhere down the road.
