It is advisable to install the "Power Commander", if you have installed an After Market Exhaust System, on a Computer Controled Fuel Injected Bike.  The Stock ECU (Brain) has been programmed to operate within a given perameter, governing Stock Components.  By changing the perameters, the ECU can no longer give the Fuel System the correct information as to Demands, or Operating Condition.
In installing the New Exhaust, you have altered the Back Pressure, and Air Flow.  Exhaust can now leave the System Faster, which draws in more Air.  If the ECU can not adjust for this, the result is More Air, Insufficient Fuel, otherwise know as a 'Lean Running Condition'.  The "Power Commander" will enrich the Fuel System to compensate for the New Exhaust System, solving the condition.

Running your Bike in a Lean Condition for prolonged periods of time will result in several damaging issues as follows:

Scorched (White)Spark Plug Insulators/ Burnt Electrodes
Heat Scoring on Piston Heads/Cylinder Walls/Upper Rings
Burnt Exhaust Valves/Exhaust Valve Seats
Heat Damaged Header Pipes (Scorced Finish/Thinning of Walls)
Excessive Heat in Header Pipes can result in additional damage in surrounding vacinity.

This is some Expensive Damage, although the Engine will not 'Blow up'.  Eventually, it will begin to run poorly, and backfire on decelleration.

Better get the "Power Commander".

......depends on the exhaust.  i have leo vince and make their sbk exhaust slip on or complete systems to run with the stock mapping.....they recommend disconnecting the battery for 5-10 min. to let the ecu reset.  bolt on and go.  i know acrapovic, i think, requires power commander and a few other companies.

here's my question to you. was it a full system of just a pipe? if it was just a slip on pipe you'll be fine. if you did headers and the whole shbang you should get a power commander. a slip on might add a pony or two but it's not going to be a big enough adjustment to the flow of your exhaust to need a PC. If you aren't sure if it was a system or slip on ask yourself how much you spent. a slip on is gonna be a few hundred and a system is a couple grand.

Renaissance_Man  gave you the best answer I see.   But: No, you do not need a "Power Commander" your eprom in your ECU needs to be either reprogrammed to run with the new pipe, or replaced with one that will work with the system you purchased.  It should have been part of the system you had installed.  The power Commander will trick your EFI/ECU  into thinking it has been reprogrammed  not the best solution but it works.

Reprogramming your eprom, should cost about an hour of labor, plus the price of the chip, $240 more or less for the chip AND should have been done when the "system" was installed.  If your dealer cannot reprogram your eprom or replace it with a stage 1 or 2 ECU, depending on your other modifications, and demands you purchase a "power commander" find a different dealer, FAST!
