Could someone help me and my son decide on a couple of bikes. We were shopping for a good 2007 middleweight. We both weigh around 150 lbs. I am 37 yrs old and he is 19 yrs old. My son has never rode a bike before so safety is a big concern for me as far as he's concerned and I thought you were the person to ask. [b]We are having trouble choosing between the SUZUKI GSXR 600, the YAMAHA YZF R-6, and the HONDA CBR600RR. I hear really good things about the Honda and how comfortable it is to ride, but it has no slipper clutch. How important is this? I thought it was designed somewhat for safety. Is that true? I hear people had some trouble with vibrations and heat to the legs on the Yamaha R-1. Is the same true for the R-6 and is this in anyones opinion a good street bike? And finally the Suzuki. I could probably pick a 600 up a little cheaper, but is this a better bike than the other two? If someone could just give me a little advice or some pros and cons to sum it up I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much.

well I will be the first (and I wont be the last) to tell you that it is a bad idea to put your 19 year old son who has no riding experience on a brand new repli-racer 600 like the ones your talking about. 1st off, those bikes have way to much power for someone so young with no riding experience. we're talking 0-100 in seconds, we're talking quarter mile times in the 10 second range.

be smart...if your getting him a 600, then you should be buying a mid 90's or earlier year 600. Like a 93 CBR600. If your talking new, then no bigger than a 500cc.

and lets talk insurance for second. If you buy a new bike, it will have to have full coverage. and full coverage for a 19 year old with no experience on a 2007 600 RR will be in the thousands (no joke) it will be more expensive than the bike.

For the sake of your son, please take a different approach than a 160MPH, 10 sec 1/4 mile missle to have your son learn to ride on. Think along the lines of taking the MSF ridercourse first, then consider a good used standard SV650, Kawasaki EX500, or Ninja 250. He will learn far more about riding than on something as scary and difficult to maneuver as the current crop of 600 crotchrockets. It is very difficult to learn proper riding techniques with a tempermental high RPM motor and the bent-over riding position these bikes have.

Great advice flickmeister and saintmole.  Now "new rider 07" apparantely you haven't rode in while either.  Go to your local dealership or friend and test drive on of these new 600's and see if that's really what you want your teenage son learning to ride on.  He could really be a safe rider, but you and him need to see first hand how he handles all the idiots on 4 wheels for a while. Get you the 600 him something older and slower and ride with him all the time and you can make alot more solid judgement from there.  Don't kid yourself, we're the same age, and he's not going to ride the same way by himself as he does with you.  About the insuance though I dont think you have to carry full coverage if you pay for them in full off the floor, you dont in goergia anyway. Be careful and be wise very, very wise. If you dont have to carry full coverage on him it is still going to be very high rates if he is on a 600 sportbike. Goodluck man.

It would most likely be in you and your sons best interest to go read this article on this site called "Budget Beginner Blasters"  at this link:

http://www.sportrider.com/features/146_0412_budget_beginner_sport_bikes/index.html

It goes over the Suzuki SV650(s), Yamaha FZ6 and the Honda 599. These are all great bikes to start off on and at the same time have a reasonably powerful engines that I'm sure will provide the thrills for years to come.

I myself own the '07 Suzuki SV650S as my first bike. And I must say, I am very happy with my decision to this day. I have been thinking about upgrading but at the same time  have held back on doing so since I am still learning and growing so much from this bike. And it's certainly by no means a slow sports bike.

Most new bikers don't like to hear that they should start off on a 250cc - 500cc bike or equivalent. That being the fact, I think one of these three before mentioned bikes would still be a very good choice without being too powerful to handle or breaking the checkbook.

Be sure to budget for gear and accessories

First of all your an idiot to concider getting your son a motorcycle. Don't you know he will become a organ donor? At the age of 19 when his brain is not fully developed he would kill himself very fast. He would maybe ride really slow are you, but around his friends he will try to impress them and hurt himself. I remember when i was 19. My first bike was a ninja500R. It was a great beginner bike, and i learned a lot from it, because its so user friendly. But even a 500r Can get you into trouble quick. DONT GET YOUR SON A SPORTS BIKE FOR HIS FIRST BIKE. I THINK THATS COMMEN SENSE, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE YOU DONT HAVE ANY. A 600CC BIKE IS LIKE GETTING YOUR 10YEAR OLD SON  A LAMBORGINI FOR HIS FIRST CAR. USE YOUR BRAIN AND DONT LET YOUR SON GET A BIKE UNTIL HIS 25.

hey
I would strongly recommend looking into the two or three day motorcycle safety riding course. It will teach you basic fundamentals and give you first hand experience on just how powerful motorcycles really are. I started on a '99 600 sport-touring and went up from there. The sv650 is a great bike but still demands respect with its v-twin low end. STAY AWAY from the R1 or any liter bike! With no riding experience it is a 160hp+ death wish. For your riding experience the specs on the above bikes are meaningless, you wont use any of them to even half their potential, so it is what fits and feels the best to you as a rider. Dont be impulsive, youll get hurt out there.

1.MSF riders course,then a valid M1 license
2.part time job for gas and to help with insurance
3.used 250cc for the next 3 to 5yrs
4.Pray to God he would not do anything stupid
5.THERE'S TWO KINDS OF BIKERS IN THIS WORLD,THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN DOWN AND THOSE WHO WILL GO DOWN. YOU WANNA SEE GRAND KIDS!
I went down yesterday, making a left turn from a cross intersection avoiding sand mixed with gravel that was at 7MPH. majority of dumped bikes happen under 30MPH because of strong gravity and almost zero momentum. Stay away from big liter bikes and start out with 250cc
