Greetings from Ohio. I've decided that the check book can't take a $7500-$8500 hit. So I'm gonna try to pick up an older bike. I've narrowed it down to:

A) 2002 Yamaha yzf-600r / $4695 / 9846 miles / Blue Book at $4325

B) 1999 Kawasaki zx-6   / $4495 /11265 miles / Blue Book at $3775

If I can get the dealer to get me out the door for the blue book value, I think I'd be happy with either bike. What do you guys think? Any personal preferences and opinions on either bike? Any particular problems with either year that spring to mind?

Damn, it's getting sunnier everyday and I don't have a bike to ride!

Years back, I was looking at the same bikes for a first sport bike.  I never got to look at the zx-6 because when I saw the 600r, I was sold.  It has plenty of power, great gas mileage,  fully adjustable suspension,  handles very well,  and has very comfortable ergos.  For an everyday bike,  the 600r is an exelent choice.

i had both go for the kawasaki! the transmission is better and the carbs are amazing. the yamaha gave me all kinds of electrical problems. kawasaki was the bike winning the races back then!

There ya go!  Two sides of the coin!
I would have to agree with s2kitsok as far as the capabilites of both bikes, although at first glance the Yami looks like the better deal in the numbers game.
It will need some service soon, as the Kawi has already passed over the 10K mark, but it will be a distant issue at the moment, provided that it has had all the scheduled stuff done, and if it runs good now, it really is the better Bike/Deal.
Closing the Deal:
The Blue Book Value is much lower than the asking price, for a very good reason.  If the price were set to the Book, it would devalue the other Bikes next to it, in the sense that someone (such as yourself) would simply buy the cheeper Bike.  In addition, the Dealer will attempt to get the higher price on the lesser value Bike simply by parking it next to the more expensive models.  Just a mind game.
Explain that you know the Book Value, and that you would be willing to pay $500 over it, provided that they offer some sort of Warranty on the Bike.  This is not so much for you to recieve any real Warranty (although they may already include a Short Term Deal), as it is a mind game right back at um!  They will figure that you are conceding more $ for something they are already giving you, and you are getting them to lower the price to a more reasonable value!  If they will offer no Warranty, insist on a new set of Tires for the $500, as this is something they can get done for next to nothing on their part.
No Garantee that this will work, but it is worth a shot!  Be ready to hold fast to your Offer, and promptly walk away if it is turned down.  They may call you back!
The Kawi at $500 over Book is a good deal, provided that they have Inspected it, and maybe done some service to it as a minimum (Oil, ect.).  If it is just a Trade-in now parked on the floor....they are ripping you off!  Dealerships have to charge more than Private Party Sellers to cover Overhead, but they better offer something in return for it!!!!!
Good Luck with it all, and let us know how it turns out.
