i would like to start off by saying that even though everybody asks similar questions about what bike to get first, I would really appreciate any and all help. I am looking for a sporty bike not necessarily a ss bike. The problem I'm running into with all the former thread answers is that I'm 6'3 and about 285 LBS. because of this the Kawisaki 250 looks kinda like I'm riding a shriner's car. I know that I'm not ready nor interested in getting a new 600 or 1000cc ss bike. Therefore I have been looking at mid nineties 600cc bikes. I'm a college student looking to buy something that I'm not going to sink several thousand dollars into(i.e. a brand new sv650) nor am I looking to buy something too small for my size then have to move up within a year (financial reasons). Thanks in advance to all who respond it is greatly appreciated and will keep any responders updated on my decision process.

Yep... Kawi 250 is pretty small for a 6'3" guy.
I don't really like to recommend any Bike for a New Rider, but I can suggest a couple that might fit you better.  You are already off to a good start by looking for a Small, Used Bike.
From the Early '90's, two examples I can give that can be found in Good Condition, and between $1500-$2500:
-Yamaha Seca II (600cc) is a strong but light Bike, that gets great MPG, and has a good reputaion for reliability, and trouble free riding.
-Kawasaki EX 500 has a great Power to Wieght Ratio, and is easy to work on, making it a good Bike to learn how to do your own Service/Maintenance.
-Honda and Suzuki were competing pretty hard for Top Slot during this Period, and in my 'humble' opinion didn't make many good Entry Bikes during the '90's, as the RF, CBR, GSXR, and Katana Models were fast (even by Today's Standards) for their Time.  Besides, it can be difficult to find Good Examples from this Period (I presume it is because the majority of them got Stacked by New Riders!).
Search 'Craig's List'.  Look at, and sit on as many Bikes as is needed to find what Fits, before your buy one, and make sure it is not too trashed, or has high miles, as it will have resale value later if you take good care of it.
I think that any of these Mid-Range Sport Bikes will feel small for you, but find one that fits OK, and use it to work your Experience Level up towards a larger Bike.  In the Future, you will be ready to find a New Bike, that Fits your Size, and Riding Ability.
Congrats to you for not using this as an excuss to start out with a ZX14!!  Good luck on your Search!!

Yeah i agree your a big boy. and that bike you have now definitley aint cutting it. Yeah i know you said something about the money but it's a small price to pay when you want to be truly happy. i got a truck and a motorcycle i pay about 840 combined for both and 2 kids that i pay child support for so i know how money can be tight or real tight sometimes. for me for example i would jump on a bussa. all my friends that are big usually ride bussa or zx-14 because if you think about about it you will pretty much swallow a 600 and a 750. a 1000 could also be a good bike for you. just dont think about getting a katana 600. that's a big bike maybe it could fit you but it so slow and ugly. it's up to you make yourself happy you only live once
