After riding my gsxr 1000 this weekend for the first time, I realized that your body weight may affect your choice as well. I weigh about 140lbs. That bikes hauls my butt way too easy. I think I would have been fine with the 600 or maybe a 750. Just take it easy out there.

Dude you are right if you buy a 600, you will totally want a bigger bike within a month. My advise is to get a 1000cc, but respect it like it will beat your ass at anytime. These bikes are't just about twisting the grip you have to be very careful. I ahve run my gixxer thru 1/8 of a mile @ about 122mph, I went thru @ 114mph once in first gear @ redline. These bikes are no joke, by the way i'm 6'4'' 240 lbs., if you a smaller guy you could go faster. Even when you think you'vr gottrn used to it, it will surprise you, i've had the front tire come up and try to smack me in the face @ 145mph in 3rd gear. Just be careful and I will tell the back brakes on these bikes are pretty much worthless when coming to a quick stop, and pretend every vehicle out there is going to pull over on you or out in front of you.

If you are going with a 1000 cc bike,, id suggest getting the gsxr1000 either 2007 or 2008 models both come with the ecm 3 mode selector. I must say that mode c feels more like a 600 cc or 750 cc bike,, you can have your cake and eat it too.. But make sure you take your motorcycle safety courses...

bigman is right on that one the new gixer 1000's are great they let you tune down the ride! i started riding about a year ago and i have already gone down, *** i went down a week after i got it but it was minor, but it scared the living *** out of me, after your first crash you'll have more respect for the power and controle of that bike. im 6'5" 310 i really didn't have a choice in the bike i got a Katana 750 and it gets me going! i've only gotten it up to 115 but that was just joking around, i didn't even try really. Moral of that story is any bike you get is gonna be enofe or more than enofe bike for you, just respect that it WILL BITE YOUR @$$!!!

I had the same delima. I sat on them both a picked the one that was most comfortable to me. I'm 5'7" not tal at all. The gixxer was a better fit for me I felt. Although I 'm a sucker for undertail Exhaust and the R1 is Just Sexy. Soooo Good luck.

At first when I read this post, I thought it was a joke. If you are buying a Gsxr1000 or an R1 as a first bike, my advice is stop by your local funeral home and make arrangements. The very fact that you are experienced with a 700hp car on a drag strip is even more reason why you should NOT start with a Gsxr1000 or R1. Your experience of "low 10's in the 1/4 mile" will get yourself into a bad situation right away. Also, since you actually believe a gsxr600 or R6 is not enough bike, it demonstrates that you have no experience when it comes to understanding the power of these motorcycles. You had enough intellegence to post this question, hopefully you will listen to the overwhelming advice. If not, you will end up just being another motorcycle fatality.
