Plus if you're ever going to ride double the 6's aren't for you! I'm only 6'1" at 180 and my wife is 5'3" at 110 and the 6's just couldn't do it unless you burned the clutch or the fuel!

Get a 600.  It takes some time to really learn to ride well.  If you get bored of the 600 add NOS!

i you are looking for a straight drag bike i wouldnt get a 1000 or a 600. these bikes are made to go fast in corners youre wasting your money if youre not going to use them for that. i would start with some junk cruiser to get the feel of things and be ok about dumping it, then go for a busa or zx14 but still be very carefull and respect these bikes they will kill you. take a class. if you want a bike to ride the canyons a 1000 is a bad choice its way too much bike for a beginner and your learning curve is going to be so slow that you are still going to be geting your ass beat by guys on harleys in a year. when you are in the corners its not about how fast your bike goes its about how fast you make it go and for 95% of all riders you wont use the full potential of a 600. i still have a 600 and i can beat 80% of the people have run into including guys on 1000s. be smart and dont think with your balls.

I can not believe your advice, any of you for that matter. Everyone in here has "heard" or made a bad decision and go on to tell anyone else not to buy a liter bike because the extra power is to much. How many of you wrecked a 600. The bike is not the problem, its the ignorance among you. I bought a brand new gixxer 1000K2 for my first bike. Not once have I layed it over or put it in a ditch. Yet I out ride my friends "who have years more experience than me with there 600s and 750s" in and out of all corners. Buell has a good marketing point, "The Rider Comes First." Well that also goes for the decisions made on any bike you ride. Not just the fastest ones. I'm going on 9000 miles incedent free, and just added NOS over this off season. I have had close calls but nothing that would have been diferent on a bike with 30 less horsepower. Most of all the supersport bikes "600 or 1000" are lighter and more nimble in a tight spot. The only thing to factor your decision is you and your self contol. I bought mine at age 24 and it was the only bike I looked at, I knew my limits and stayed within them for 9000 miles and have never looked back!

I would suggest a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R. You will learn everything that is needed to know. After a few years you can move up. Your 700+ BHP car is NOTthe same as a motorcycle like a GSXR 1000 or R1.

he hasn't replied yet, probably he went through with the R1 or GSXR1K & died while riding it home from the dealer.

i would have loved to take out an insurance policy on 1320racer, a liter bike for a first bike is just crazy. i ride a 600RR with a few mods & it is more than enough for me, i do trackdays & not to toot my own horn, i am faster than some R1, 1000RR, 1098, GSXR1K, GSXR750 riders in my own class (intermediate).

was it easy? nope. was it fun? YES. going past those bikes on the outside or overtaking them on the exit going to the main straight is very gratifying & gives you a sense of accomplishment.

i would never recommend a 600 or 1000 sportbike as a first bike, i started on small bikes & worked my way up the ranks, these new sportbikes are very unforgiving bikes, even a simple mistake can lead into a fatal accident.

i wish the US would implement a tiered licensing system like that in the UK, a lot of people would still be alive today if that were the case & you'd have lower insurance rates.

Becoming a motorcycle enthuses is going to be a turning point in you life, however your must first examine what purpose your motorcycle will serve for you. My suggestion to you is that if you are going to turn your track devouring race bread R1 or GSX-R 1000 in to a drag bike you also examine other conventional drag bikes, “Busa” or Kawasaki’s 1400, but if your set on a 1000 do it.

1320racer:
I am currently in the market for a bike, I've never rode on anything except for a pocket bike once.  I'm more interested in a GSX-R1000 or R1 but I've been told that it would be better to stick with a GSX-R600 or R6.

I know that the more powerful bikes arent for a beginner rider but I know that I will be looking to upgrade as soon as I get the hang of how to control the power of a 600.

I currently own a 700+hp car that goes low 10s in the 1/4 mile so I am not afraid of going fast but I think I am controled enough to not push the bike more than my limit.

I know that having a fast car doesnt mean I can control a fast bike but my plans would be to take the bike to the drag strip once I am comfortable with it and this is one of my main concerns since I dont want to be looking to sell a 600 6mths after I buy it for a 1000.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Do it!!!!! And make sure the you part that R1 out to me after your total it!!!!!

Seriously though. I just upgraded to an 04 R1 after 2 years on a 06 R6 before that 2 years on a Seca II. The R6 was no joke, but the R1 is lethal. I'm still scared of it. You can get whatever you want, but you'll never be able to ride it well unless you spend time learning how to ride on something you can make mistakes on.

I would not suggest on start off with an R1 or gsx 1000. If you dont have much experience on a bike it is dangerous just start off with a bike with that much power and having to watch out for the people around you. I started off on a kawasaki ninja 650 and that was a great bike to learn on.

Ive said this before. Most riders have no buisness on a 1000. They cant use all that power. The 600's alone have taken their share of lives. Ive spent 20 years as a motorcycle mechanic putting crashed bikes back together. KTAYLOR46 is RIGHT. So far he is the only one I've seen post that is smart & has a brain. The guy trying to see you his landbarge Busa should be pimp slapped. Busa's are tanks as well as ZX1400's Dont buy a 1000. Buy Kool & your a fool<--respectfully stated

I have no room to provide advice on the 1000cc bikes as I am still a novice.  I bought an '07 R6 for my first bike and it has more than enough power.  Based on my experience with the R6 and the hundreds of posts/articles I've read about liter bikes, it would not be a smart decision to start with a 1000.

I bought the R6 mainly for cruising and commuting.  I don't ever plan to race and I fully respect my machine.  I don't think a 600cc is a terrible starter bike IF AND ONLY IF you have a level head, restraint, maturity and respect.  In the second that you lose any of the above, things can get turn ugly!

In general, most bikes have good resale value so don't be afraid of trading up after a few months (in the unlikely event you get bored).  Your life is worth it!  Riding is all about skills/technique and it's easier to learn those skills on a less powerful bike.

Last year I bought an 07 gsxr600 for my first bike. Put 7400 miles on her and scared myself plenty of times. I just bought an 07 gsxr1000 that's brand new and won't go back.iI you can handle 700hp responsibly, go for the bigger bike. You'll know what you can handle when you fall. Hopefully you don't.
