I'm a big backpack fan, especially for commuting. To me, it's just a lot more convenient to get on/off the bike and carry your crap w/you. I WAS a bit more of a tankbag guy back in the days of metal tanks/magnetic bags, but all the straps that are necessary now just look like ass. And, my bikes are pretty--I'm not, so I figure I'd rather mess up my lines than the bikes'.
My favorite currently (and the one I'm using)is the Knox ---it's roomy, shaped to fit your back, has awesome, secure straps to avoid the parachute effect, and has an attached helmet bag. And, like Knox'protective gear,it seems well put together. Plus, it's solid black w/out garish designs/logos. The A-Stars pack was also nice, but it seems to be discontinued.

I don't use one. While this is not based on any evidence I have seen, my feeling is that if you go down, the back pack has the potential to cause serious back injuries. If anyone has any evidence that my fear is unfounded, please let me know. In the meantime, I'll stick with a tail pack or tank bag.

I use a backpack and a rear seat bag. A tank bag restricts me, from moving like I want. I use a sandpiper backpack that is comfortable, and holds snug to my body. I use a rear seat for carrying big items to work, and riding with the wind. The rear seat bag helps with wind flow, but is time consuming. Sometimes my backpack, slides down my back. I just take it one day at a time, but I like the rear seat bag better.
