The term "squid" is used to refer to a "stupid" rider. These are some of the characteristics of a squid; 1.)rides to show off. 2.) wears a tank top, shorts, and flip flops while riding. 3.) "chicken strips on thier tires"

Hey I have chicken strips on my rear tire... It's not because I want them there it's because I have a bad front and I can't get over any further than that lip on the front will let me.   I've got a new one on the way though and off the chicken strips will go.

I thought the term "squid" meant un-experienced rider. Because they over load them self's with too many thoughts and decisions. (Like a Squid or octopus that have a brain on each of their eight tentacles) ...that to an experience rider are second nature.

A new rider is a squid... Yeah! But it does not mean he/she is a stupid rider.

Someone who rides to show off better know what he is doing... Because when he miscalculates and drops the bike he went from cool to stupid...

It's not because they are a new rider that they are marked as a squid. There are guys that have been riding for a while that are still squids. Basically they are the guys that don't consider all the possible hazards before going riding. They will get on a GSXR 1000 or R1 really any sport bike for that matter, wearing shorts, wife beater, ball cap backwards and sandals and fly down the highway at 100+ plus miles and hour. You'll know a squid when you see one. They are the guys that bought a bike with thinking they'll just look cool instead of actually knowing how to ride safe and properly.

squid's give all bikers a bad image. (not to mention keeping insurance rates up) like everyone has said, wife beater, shorts, flip flops, no lid, 100 plus mph in 50 mph zones.
by the way, let me get opinions from everyone... do you typically wear jackets, etc. when you ride? I do, but I see more and more (especially since it's summer) people who don't wear them...just a t shirt.
oh, and a squid...my nephew just bought a zzr600 a month ago. no license...thought he would learn on it. ok, no problem. told me tonight that he has already topped it out (he claims 170 - I don't buy it) goes around town standing - yes STANDING on the tank. after one month, told me he outgrew it and bought a ZX14! I told him he'd be dead in less than a year. anyway, good example of a "squid"

From Wikipedia which has an excellent term for a "squid":

Often young, squids are identified by their reckless abandon (speeding, wheelies, stoppies etc.) and by their inappropriate attire (shorts, backwards ball caps, flip flops, wifebeater T-shirt, etc). Such a rider eschews all or most of the protective gear worn by many riders (helmet, gloves, leather jacket, riding pants, and boots) and the social and legal norms of riding behaviour, and as such is looked upon with derision by experienced motorcyclists, who also refer to them as "organ donors", "Zip-Splats", "a Stillie", "Skin Crayons", "Sausage Creatures"<1> and "soon-to-be-ex-motorcyclists".

They could also be called "squids" because of Paramedics' slang for motorcyclists. In a bad accident without leathers or other good protection, it's possible for the torso to become detached from the legs. At that point, the intestines can drag along behind the torso - thus giving a grisly "tentacled body" appearance.

I was under the impression they were called squids because they ride like a squid swims.  First, they shoot really fast in a straight line.  Then, when they get to a turn, they slow down to almost a complete stop, turn really sharp, then shoot out in another direction.  Almost like a cartoon lightning bolt, and how it zig-zags.

And yes, I did join the forum just to post this reply.

Here in Oz 'Squid' simply means someone who rides with no protective gear: eg t-shirt, no gloves etc. So if they hit the road their skin disappears and they end up looking like a squid (If you think it won't, just crouch  down and run your hand along some bitumen).

And Chicken Strips? stupid term used by young insecure riders about the unused tread on the edge of their tyres. Don't make things hard on yourselves, you won't use all the tread unless you're on the track anyway - well, not if you want to live long that is. Just enjoy riding!

i'm actually kinda proud of my "chicken strips".  I don't ride any track days and i have just recently started riding.  although not all would agree with me, having those strips just means that i don't put myself into any unnecessarily dangerous speeds around a turn.  I have been called a "squid" just because i only have about 1100 miles experience and it actually made me pretty irate.  I wear all my gear no matter what.  too many things can happen too fast to not wear it.  oh and this guy that was calling me a squid was helmet, hoodie, shorts and boots.
