navy_rider:
And you said you have the key right?  I would try to start every single 03 R1 I saw, and write the tags down and just start reporting them stolen, you never know you might get lucky.

Navy_rider,

When my bike was stolen I was crazy enough to think about doing that, and every 2002 Yamaha R1 I saw parked, I would check the Vin number. It was sort of like looking for a needle in a hay stack that is not there.(from my research, most stolen bikes that are recovered are in the form of a frame only, so it is unlikely my R1 is still out their in one original piece) I already filed a routine police report as stated on the thread above, so doing it again will serve no purpose. The tide is changing, and the more "innocent" bikers learn about this dirty little secret of the biking world the better. And with the addition of Lojack, it will aid recovery of the stolen bikes and the authorities may catch a few of the low life thiefs and put them in jail and throw away the key. (I really wish the authorities would throw away the key when they lock them up, but unfortunately they usually just get a slap on the hand and they go back to business as usual.)

I beleive you man, I just had my 06 gsxr600 stolen about a month ago and I also had only liability ins.  Because of a accident I had over 2 years ago I cannot get full cov. They wanted $5,000 a mnth for 4 mnths. Im not making this up! I had to get ins. in my wife's name. I feel for you, I just lost about $20,000 that I had in my bike and I still have to pay for! I'm now getting an 07 gsxr750 thanks to the Suzuki theft coverage, which only covers $5,000 and makes me get a brand new one or I dont get anything at all.  My advice is to get Lojack installed like I had planned on, and will sure do first thing this time. It's pretty cheap and w/Lojack you also get a warranty if they dont find your bike in 24 hrs. they will pay for it. Just dont wait too long to get it like I did.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to hear about your bad experience.  Since I've been in your shoes, I can understand how you feel.  I just wish you read my thread before you had your 06 GSXR600 stolen.  I want to get even with all those thiefs by hitting them in the pocket book where it hurts.  If the word gets out about this problem, there will be less people for them to victimize and maybe they will be less likely to try to steal bikes.  I refuse to purchase another bike until this problem is cleaned up. It's like adding fuel to the fire for this problem if I continue to purchase bikes.  I still check the stolen bike reports at my local police station and the theft rate has not changed yet.  Since Lojack for bikes has been in the market for only a short time, the jury is still out how effective it will be against these thiefs.
I'm still a little skeptical about how good Lojack will work because many of these thiefs work for the dealerships and they would have knowledge of the location of the Lojack on your bike once you bring it in for service.
Well, only time will tell.  Hoping for the best though. Then I might just think about purchasing a bike again.

Apparently the Lojack location is known only to the installer.  It's supposed to be very effective in the areas that support it.  I'd consider it for the bike I'm getting this summer, but VT gets hosed for most technology.  I think we're one of the states most behind the tech curve, aside from Montana.

Because motorcycles have very limited places to hide the Lojack system, unlike a car, a service mechanic or helper should be able to Locate the Lojack easily while they service the bike. They could then just relay the location of the system to their partners in crime and presto another stolen bike. I may be wrong but the tracking devices I have seen are at least the size of a cell phone plus a back up battery pack, so it should not be hard to spot the hidden Lojack in a motorcycle.

Still...it'd be much better just to go will comprehensive insurance and install an antitheft device.  The LoJack is theft recovery.  Or better yet, move to a state with less thefts.

My job is here in the good old sunshine state, so moving would be impossible.  Antitheft devices is only a noisy distraction for the thiefs.  And last, if I ever decide to purchase another bike, it will definitely be fully insured. Once bitten twice shy!

i myself have never experieced your type of lose exsportrider. i am sorry to hear of your misfortune. with all the new technology we have today you would think the manufacturers would come up with a solution. we have fingerprint codes etc for cars, could we not to the same for bikes as well? or maybe park your bike within reach of some of the biggest, meanest dogs you can find. i dunno. there has to be a solution that sits well with the consumers and the makers. you would think that the manufactures would be concerned about this problem as well. things like this cause the insurance rate to go up hence making it harder to sell bikes.

In the short term, the manufacturers may sell more bikes.  But the lost of customer's like me will definitely affect their long term bottom line.  The insurance companies will also lose when people like me decide to just quit the sport as the insurance rates go up and up.  I saw the new 2007 sport bike line up.  There is nothing there to temp me back.  I just can not understand the trend of partially faired Super Sport bikes.  They are just plain ugly. The only exception is the 2007 Ducati Desmosedici RR GP replica.  Now that's a sport bike.

Patience grasshoppa, little steps first. Maybe in a few years and a 100,000 miles or so later, you will have the funds and ability to purchase a dream bike like the Ducati Desmosedici RR.

If i had the money, I'd have to buy 2 Desmosedici 's and 2 of the MV Agusta CC the $100,000+ one.  1 to ride and the other to sit in my living so i could just stare at it.  Every time i look at something like the Ducati, it makes me laugh even harder at all those crappy customes things they build on the shows.  A beautiful bike is one that not only looks great but that performs great.

The 2007 MV Agusta F4CC is just and updated old Ducati 916 with a cyclops head light with a higher horsepower motor and carbon bits.  It's design is dated.  I would not pay $10,000 for that bike.
Now the 2007 Ducati Desmosedici RR is an entirely different animal.  My only gripe on the design are the pig ear side view mirrors and the rear turn signal stalks. Change those two little bits and you have a perfect sport bike.  Oh almost forgot, remove all that red and white paint on all the fairing pieces and reveal the beautiful carbon fiber black luster underneath and clearcoat it.
