Conflicting Opinions

Ok, so do we like the Kawasaki ZX10/ZX636 digital tach, or not. Apparently the guys writing for SportRider can't make up their minds (Read the ZX14 article for reference) They apparently like or dislike it depending on whether the opposite one is in front of their face..... I hate digi-tachs and digital speedos, the slow refresh rate causes great clumps of numbers to go by under full acceleration. They should be left in the 80s/mid 90s where they belong. When I'm looking down at a tach under full throttle, I can much easier cap off a redline or a powerband shift with a analog tach than a digital tach. Tested a few bikes this way, and I just prefer the analog and it's also easier to see. One thing that's kept me off of both the ZX10R and the 636, though I love both bikes otherwise. Currently saving my pennies for a ZX14 or a Hayabusa. Anybody else have an opinion?

Hey man I totally agree with you, analog gauges rule all!
That's one I reason why I like riding my 919:

I like the analog tach as well but I I don't mind the digital speedometer. It's kind of nice to look down and see in big ol' nubmers how fast you are going rather than following the pin.

Uhhhh...I read the story and I don't see any conflict there. Did you read the story?

'Old school' analog - the digital stuff belongs on Old

Wingers and other touring machines.

I can't believe that someone would join a Sportrider message board, which is run by one of the editors of Sportrider, and then in one of his very first posts... disrespect the writers of Sportrider. Especially with something so unfounded.

With such a great question, too. "Hey do you guys like digital or analog tachometers." Who gives a $hit.

"Hey everyone. Sportrider sucks. Do you guys like red or blue better?"
LOSER!

You would have also had to read tests where they consistently bash the ZX10/ZX636 digital tach/speedo setup. Maybe last issue where they did the 600 comparo? "Dump The Crappy Digital Tach" is a fairly consistent theme. Then suddenly in the ZX14 article, that writer backpedals and says "We've always liked the Kawasaki digital tach setup and wish that would have been used here". (Not a direct quote) A little consistency would be nice..... Either like it or hate it, but be consistent. I think that might generate more respect from the readers.

Yep, I read those other stories pretty thoroughly, and sure remember those comments. But there's nothing like what you say in the ZX-14 test. Are you sure you read that right? Maybe you should check again and get your facts right before you "not a direct quote" something.

Well, you sure aren't doing too good of a job at that SO far.

How's that for a freakin' CONFLICTING OPINION?

I have a ZX-10R.  The digital tach takes some getting used to.  I think it is kind of cool actually...  Granted an analog tach is easier to read at a glance.  If I raced (drag racing or road racing) I'd definitely want an analog tach.  I do like having a digital speedometer.  It is nice having the big numbers in front of you.  And I am not really concered if it skips numbers under full acceleration...  I am too busy looking ahead to care if I am going 131 mph or 135 mph or whatever since I am still accelerating...

It's actually part of the caption of one of the pictures. Page 30, top left corner. "Instrument panel layout is nice and easy to read although we'd still prefer a digital speedometer". Kinda goes against everything I've read in other articles....
No true sports cars have digital instrumentation, not Porsche , not Ferrari, (Lamborghini I think combined a digital and analog speedo, which is fine), and personally I prefer seeing the sweep of a needle rather than the hurried rush of numbers clicking off. Corvette dashes used to be digital, for like 15 years, but thankfully GM went back to analog guages, at least as an option.  I'm asking which one you guys preferred, and for a little consistency amongst the SportRider writers. Apparently some of you decided to get all butt-hurt about it. If you give me your address I'll send along a free tube of Preperation-H for your little problem.

Hard to fit an automotive sized dashboard on a motorcycle. Except maybe for a Goldwing or K1200LT touring-sized rig...

I agree, the circular digital tach on the previous model ZX-6R and ZX-10R has useability issues. As does the RC-51 digital tach.

IMHO, analog tach and digital speedo gives best compromise. On a motorcycle. I don't really care what the transient speed is when accelerating.  Digital speedo gives easiest, quickest reading at a glance of your steady state speed. And if the readout has shot up above 80mph in clumps- you know you are breaking the law.
