Yeah, you can go to www.progressive.com and get a free qoute.

I was 20 going on 21 when I bought my first bike...  Also a 250 Ninja...  I had full coverage thru Alstate I believe...  I think I was paying $350 per year for full coverage.  Depending on where you live, it could be more or less....  $250 deductibles...  Not sure what just liability would be...  Half??

Who ever you use for insurance, your best bet is to try and get it 'spun off' of your parents policy.  Or maybe they can add it to their policy and you just pay them....

MSF course is a great idea.  Some insurance companies will give you a break/deduction for passing the course.  And some states will give you your license after passing the course also.

One way to help mitigate insurance premiums is store the bike in the off season if you have one or if you go through a period of time when you can't ride. Many companies allow you to store the bike for a minimum fee which will still protect you from theft or fire. Also if you ever get a ticket for speeding ask the prosecutor for a PLEA in LIEU of Obeyance. In some states, this will keep the ticket from appearing on your record as long as you don't get another one for a set time i.e. 6 mo. to a year. Good Luck-- John

I'm 22 years old and did a free qoute on progressive.com. With the MSF deduction for a 2006 SV650S it was about $90.00 a year for just liability.

Midman,
Progressive is the way to go. My yearly insurance on my 250 was $69 a year for the legal minimum. I was quoted at $178/year on my brand new 600.

Just remember, being 17, the first time you *** up on that bike, they'll never let you ride one again. I had to move out before I could get on a bike again. I'm not sayin you will, but cute girls can mess with your mind.

Good luck and safe riding.

Callfornia laws allow liability only on insurance if you finance?

Or are you folks buying the bike outright in cash?

Not sure if I'd go liability because if your the only one involved in a wreck then you get hosed. I would like to reccomend State Farm. Full coverage on my R6 was $350/yr and when I turned 25 it dropped to $103.50/yr. Yeah you heard right. $8.62 a month for full coverage on a 2006 R6.

quoted @ $506/12 mo for a Suzuki GS500 by progressive.. lowest coverage available. i have a geico car insurance policy and geico said they wouldnt even insure me... then progressive, which quoted me about $225/mo for my car for liability says i can have it for a motorcycle @ $40/mo ? something is backwards here... love Illinois... i bet for a 250, progressive will be pretty cheap, even though you are 17 (im 20)

Progressive gives an extra discount to riders who also have their car insurance with them. My quotes, as a 24 year old rider with MSF training and a clean driving record, are none too exciting.

1998 GS500F - $210/yr liability or $338/yr full with $500 deduc.
2004 Honda 599 - $497/yr liability or $1060/yr full with $500 deduc.

Interesting how full coverage premiuim triples with the newer 599.

Wonder what the rates are for a 2004 GS500F (full fairing).

wow! some of you are getting great deals on insurance. I know in Texas USAA won't even insure bikes at all. For my bike (zx6r)Geico quoted me @ 152.00 a month. Progressive was a few bucks more. State Farm, however will be 79 bucks a month, but I have to transfer both my cars over to them as well. Some places will allow "liability" only if the bike was bought for less than 8 grand. I, wouldn't recommend it though. oh - i have a clean record and I'm 39.

The quote difference is proportionate to the value difference - $2000 vs $6000. They didn't take VIN numbers, so the actual insurance pricing might vary, but those are the rough numbers.

I'm asking on the 2004 GS500F and Ninja 500/650 just for reference. My insurance agent will probably want me to die by the time I actually get a bike.

SHUT UP NO ONE LIKES YOU! Just kiddin. :P

Yeah. Assuming that'd be about the same for me, that puts it in the exact same spot as the 599, which I suspected it would be. Drat and egad.
