Prevent your bike from being stolen

Since I'm planning on getting a new bike I have to factor in the cost for anti-theft devices. I live in an apartment complex & I've already got my car-stereo stolen.

How much would a Lojack & a theft deterrent alarm run into.

Are these good enuff measures or is there something else advisable...

I dunno about lojack, but I got a Scorpio alarm system on mine. Runs about $400.00 if you want the perimiter sensor, backup battery, and remote engine cut-off. Supposedly the fm remote is good for 1/2 a mile range.

I think LoJack is in the $700+ range.

If you have to park in a public or semi-public area.

- Get a bike cover. Coveting and prying eyes tend to be thieving ones.

- Get a good lock and secure the bike to a solid, immovable object.

- Don't leave it parked in high security risk areas out of sight for long.

This will deter a casual would be thief. Not much to do against pros. For that, get good insurance.

I have some buddies that swear by the Scorpio alarm...they have the upgraded one that allows you to track it though GPS so if it's stolen you know exactly where it's going

i think a motion sensor light the brightest one that hits your bike directly will be of some help too since will hes trying to break the lock and a bright light is on him hes like on a stage and he might blush   hhmmm have a question is it posible too hook up some kinda doorbell device to the light sensor?

I think I'm gonna go paranoid over this one. You see, we have remote-controlled basement parking in my apartment complex & yet my car-stereo got stolen. I know I should have removed the face-plate...

The other option is to keep it below my apartment window & let my new bike brave the elements, man this sucks

I've been thinking, is it ok to keep your bike in your apartment, my rent agreement doesn't say anything of this sort, this would buy far be the best option...

I couldn't find the scorpio alarm with the GPS option(Spyke), can I get a link...

Also, lets say my bike gets stolen in the first week I bought it, do I still owe the insurance agency the rest of the insurance premium, sounds stupid but there is always the fine print

Thanks

If you dont mind keeping you bike in your apartment I would definitely do that. I keep my bike in my own garage and I still have it locked up with ab ABUS chain and lock to a cemented i-hook. The Scorpio is a good idea especially with the GPS, I never heard of that though, must be new. As long as you have theft coverage and your insurance is up to date and in effect then I dont think theres a problem. KEEP THE BIKE IN YOUR APARTMENT, NEXT TO YOUR BED, I WOULD.

That's where gap insurance could come in handy...

I would think keeping a motorcycle in an apartment would be pretty tough on your flooring material, which could cost you in the long run. I live in apartments that have a huge car prowling/theft issue as well, and no enclosed carports/garages. I opted for a good alarm to deter/stop the amateur thieves, and good insurance to compensate me if a professional thief decides he wants my bike.

Screw your flooring material.  If you can put it in your apartment, do it.  And yeah, put it beside your bed, that idea rocks .

I have even thought about storing my bike in my house during the winter but its too hard to get it up and down stairs all the time

Here is the link for the Scorpio alarm:

I believe they call it the range confirmation signal.

Oh, ya the RCS is nice. It basically tells you if your remote is getting the signal from your alarm system or not. It's not a GPS that says where your bike is, but it tells you whether or not you are going to be alerted if the alarm does get triggered. If you are out of range when your alarm is triggered, then assuming your bike is still there when you get back the sustem will update your remote and tell you what time the alarm was triggered, and what type of alert it was; ie whether someone set off the perimiter alert, bumped it, tilted it, or fiddled with the ignition.
