Wow, I'm surprised they'd do that. I've seen a couple on ebay for sale already, I don't see why anyone trying to sell their '06 R6 would sell it instead of having Yamaha buy it back. True I'm sure those numbers are small but there are people out there who've already bought it, rode it a while and are trying to sell it. I wonder how Yamaha will resell them, how they'll work it out with the dealers?

Mazda did the same thing with the Miata or RX8 (or maybe both) when their HP numbers were off.

Yes I remember that with the Miatas and the RX8s, though I don't specificly remember them buying back the RX8s like they did the Miatas...but like you said, maybe they did. I think lying about how much power an engine produces is a little different though. It's been said before theres a lot of sportbikes out there whos tachs are not accurate, and no company offered to buy back all those bikes. The '05 ZX6RR's tach shows a redline of 16,500 but SR couldn't get it to spin to even 15k last year. Both my '01 YZF600R and '03 SV650's tachs were off by the same % as Yamaha claims the R6's tach is off by.
IMHO the press made a a much much bigger deal out of this bikes "17,500rpm redline" than Yamaha did. Yamaha's tach was off just like some other bikes, yamaha listed the specs just like everyone does, and the media ran off with it.

That's not entirely true. Yamaha used the 17,500 thing in a quite a bit of advertising as well. Not just specs list. Also, of course the media ran with it, Yamaha was claiming something many believe to not be possible. With current technologies and materials, traditional valve springs are not capable of closing valves fast enough for 17,500 RPM. F1 cars do it, but they use pnuematic valves. It was a pretty big claim.

What I'd like to see Yamaha do, is put a new face on the tach with a 16,000 rpm redline. Put the 16 where the 17.5 mark is, and then space everything accordingly.... They'd have the most accurate tach out there.
I can see some built in speedometer error, but I can really think of a reason for having an inaccurate tach. Anyone?

I'm still waiting for the blue R6 to come in the shop. If yamaha stop shipping the R6 because of this, then I will be pissed. I really don't care it the tach is off 9%. Speedo's are off and you never hear people bitching about that. On a side note, I had the mechanic test the tach on the new R6. He observed the tach going to 18k and then he stopped. He was in 3rd gear doing this. I know the tack is off, but I'll let you guys do the math. Also, I'll point out that he is a Kawasaki rider, so there is no bias opinions. He calls it how he sees it.

Actually, people complain about speedometers all the time....
And FWIW, 18k -10% = 16.2k.... So he was close to the rev limiter kicking in.
I don't think that they are going to stop shipping the bike. I think they are just letting the people who bought the bike thinking that it would rev to 17.5k like the PR dept said it would, get out of the deal if they aren't happy that it wouldn't do so. Now that is a run on senctence. I am sure that the people who are otherwise happy with it will keep it.
Have fun with the Blue one when you get it.

I just wish this whole thing would lead to more accurate tachs. It's been said before, the ECU knows EXACTLY what RPM the engine is at, so can't the tach get that same info?

i think Honda's tachs on the 600RR & 1000RR are nearly spot on, i've seen dyno graphs of a 600RR hitting the limiter at 15,000rpm so i think we should tipoff our hats to Honda for making accurate tachs.

The tachs on my '01 YZF600R and '03 SV650S seemed to have a slight delay in them, it seemed like there would be a fraction of a delay before the tach started to rise with the engine and when you rolled off the throttle the tach didnt drop as quickly as the engine. I noticed this A LOT less on an '01 R1 and '01 F4i. But I've been told they all use a similar system for getting info to the tach, so I dunno.

Can you post a picture or link to one of those graphs for a Honda OveRRev? I've seen my share of dyno runs, but I've never, ever heard them bounce it off of the rev limiter. And what would indicate it on the graph that they hit the limiter? Power starts to tail off with a stock bike before it hits red line anyway... Most of the time it only gets run until the indicated redline.... From my experience, Honda's tachs are just as inaccurate as everyone else's.

Here you go Chris, it's graph from an '03-'04 CBR600RR fitted with a GPR Ti slip-on which's the same as mine (GPR made the exhausts for Polini's 4stroke scooter/big bike line-up).
and here is one for the '04-'05 CBR1000RR;
i hope you find it to your liking.
