So I'm about 1 month away from buying my first bike. I already took the MSF course and have pretty much finished up my research. I have decided on the 05 SV650...checking used prices I would be more comfortable spending the extra $500-750 for a new bike.
My question is, What's the deal with the SV650 front suspension. I don't know anything about motorcycle suspension, and the bike got great reviews but I have read multiple reviews complaining about the bikes front forks...too soft, squishy, bottoms out, makes the front tire hop, dives alot when braking. etc.
Should this be a concern for me? Being a new rider, am I going to notice this? One reviewer said switching out the 7 weight oil for 15 or 20 in the front?
Any info would be a great help. Thanks.

SV and its ilk are at what's consider an entry level price point. In order to keep, the cost within this price range, manufacturers cannot specify the latest and greatest components. On bikes like the SV, it typically means the suspension is older technology, less expensive units than the ones found on more expensive bikes.
As a new rider, may I suggest you work on the riding fundamentals. Enjoy the bike and riding! Then, as your skill progresses, you may consider suspension upgrades. Since the SV is such a popular bike for lightweight racing, there are lots of options, indeed.
Cheers.

Exactly what Tevo said. The suspension isn't the same quality as say a Geo Metro, it's more like the quality of a suspension in a Mustang and the suspension of the race replicas (GSXR, CBRs, Ninjas, ect) are more like that found in a corvette. Ford's able to offer you a V8 sportscoupe for $25k, they gotta skimp a little somewhere...and solid rear axle to many is one place they skimped. The Corvette has another $20k worth of sticker so they can afford better suspension....like an indepentend suspension in the rear. You can still drive the mustang aggressively in the corners and have a lot of fun with it, just don't expect it to handle as well as a corvette right out of the box (stock).
And yes MANY people have SV's for track/race bikes so there are tons of aftermarket suspension pieces out there when the time comes.
