I've been looking into getting a bike and I've narrowed it down to the Suzuki SV650S and the Yamaha FZ6. I'm a new rider without any experiance, however, I am going to take the training course before I get a bike. I want a bike that I'll be happy with for several years before getting a better one. I've heard quite a bit about the SV650, but I haven't really heard much about the FZ6. I plan on taking a few road trips, so long distance comfort is a plus. Any input would be well appriciated. I know people ask these types of questions all the time.

It's a toss up, the inline-four FZ6 is more powerful than the v-twin SV650 but imo, the SV is the sweeter bike with more character and personality.
Both would be nice all around bikes but I think if touring of any kind is in order, the FZ6 would be more amenable than the racier ergonomics of the SV650.
What do you want? A middleweight v-twin or a middle weight inline-four? Which one looks better to you?
Last but not least, If this is your first foray into motorcycling, it would probably be good you get some rider training- like that offered by the MSF

Cheers.

Here’s a pretty good comparison of two … http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/roadtests/7k/
IMHO the FZ6 is less fun at street-legal speeds and not nearly as beginner friendly with its higher rev’ing and peaky I-4. That it sports 20 extra hp is a little deceptive – you actually feel a lot more low-end grunt on the SV.
After being off the pegs for over a decade, I test rode both last year and ended up with the SV. It’s a very easy bike to gain (or regain) skills and confidence with but still powerful enough to hang with the race-reps once you're ready. After 2K miles of daily commuting I’m still happy with it and have no plans to trade up.
Noob to noob, I think you’d be happier with the SV.

I'd go with the SV. The FZ6 is known for being quite buzzy and peaky. Also there have been a lot of complaints about the FI.

Motorcycle-usa.com comparison test with FZ6, SV, 599, Speed4
I agree with what's been posted before in this thread. The FZ6 has a more relaxed seating position, probably better for touring and commuting. I'll take the FZ6's on the highway but anything below highway speeds and I'd rather have the short gearing, light weight, fat midrange torque of the v-twin Suzuki...it's just so much more fun at sane/legal speeds than a peaky inline four.

Well I think I might as well go with the SV- it sounds like the better choice. I've already signed up for the MSF course at the end of march. Now all I have to do is wait for that, and to sell my car (which my friend will probably buy and sell his car cheap to me). I'm really looking forward to riding a bike on the open road.
