Sluggish K5 GSXR

I've owned the K2 and K3.  Though I love my 2005 I find it seems a bit sluggish upto about 6000 rpm compared to the previous ones.  Does anyone with a 2005, who previously had a K2 or K3, find the same thing, or is it that I have a "slow" one.

I don't have one, but I've read in Sport Rider and other mags that the K5s fuel injection is a little soft/fluffy below 5000 rpm or so...  Maybe that is what you are feeling.  Get a pipe, PC and map.  All should be good after that.

I wonder if the '05s have taller gearing and if so by how much, that could play a factor too.

First of all, it would be helpful if you narrowed it down a little. Are we talking 600, 750 or 1000?

I assumed he was talking 1000, one of each generation, hmm...

Look at the bright side, you could have bought a 1000RR like I did.  Take your K5, add 30lbs and subtract 10hp, 2 ftlbs and 1500rpm+.

At least I dont have to worry about blowing the engine on my honda.

I don't have the issue of Sport Rider handy....  But I think the '05 GSXR1000 K5 has the same gearing for 1st thru 3rd, and 4th thru 6th have been shortened.  The K5 has a higher redline than the previous models.  I don't think it is gearing, but I could be wrong.

I am not that familiar with gixxers.    I know the 1000s used the K1-5...  I am not sure about the 750s and 600s.  I assume that this person is talking about the 1000.

I still am leaning towards the FI.  Maybe Trevit can help answer this.  Or someone with a K5.

Maybe some more info on your old K2 and K3.  Were they stock?  Did you regear them?  Maybe your new K5 feels slow/sluggish but really isn't.

The "K" designations are used on all of the GSXR's starting in 2001. There was no 1000 before then, but before 2001 the 600 and 750 used different letters for each year. Starting in '86 with the first 750 using a "G" the "H" for '87 and so on. They skipped a couple of letters in between though.

As for the sluggishness. I'm not sure if this is a factor, but I know from riding the K5 1000, and from reading about it...it has a nasty off idle throttle stumble. It was rather annoying to me and I could imagine people might compensate for that and not get into as hard as they might want to. You might be doing it and not even realize it. I would suggest either getting the stock ECU remapped, any dealership with a Yosh box can do it, or if you really want it clean, get a PCIII and have a custom map made.

Sorry guys I should have said.  It's the 1000.  My other two were stock, same as my 2005.  To me the others were like 250's on steroids, they really moved.  This one seems to have a "beefier" more solid feel to the engine and doesn't seem as frenetic.

Suzuki seem to have controlled the fuel injection better, and when going over bumps I don't have to concentrate too hard on keeping the throttle from being twisted.  The FI now seems to act more like carbs.  The power is more controlable.

I really like the bike, but as I said before, I wonder if I have a slow one.  I ran it in the same way as the other two, so I don't think it is that.

I was just wondering if anyone who previously owned a 2001 to 2004 found the 2005 different in it's power delivery.

I have both a K4 as well as a K5 GSXR1000. The 2004 has a PCIII, Akro Evolution, filter etc. The 2005 is basically stock (for now)so we are really not comparing apples to apples. The '05 is a little "fluffy" below 4 grand but above that point, in my opinion, there is now comparison and above 7 grand you better hold on tight. One very simple way I found to improve this is to adjust the idle setting. The stock idle setting is around 1,100 RPM. I increased it to the maximum suggested of between 1,400 and 1,500 RPM. Within a month I am going to make some improvements to let her breathe. Long story short, performance wise the K5 wins hands down. As far as comfort I would pick the K4.

I think you have about covered it.  Your bike sounds the same as mine.  I didn't raise the idle, but took all the slack out of the throttle, and that gave it more low down response.

Funnily enough I find my 2005 more comfortable that my 2003, except for the footpegs, I find they are a bit too far forward for my 6'3" height.  And that's probably because the bars are further back.  I'm sure aftermarket rear sets will cure the problem.

I haven't owned the previous generation Gixxer thou, however, I picked up a K5 2 months ago. I too had the rough off idle problem. I took it to my ace mechanic for a throttle body sync. He adjusted the air correctors on the throttle bodies, I believe to 1.5 turns out from closed. In fact when he started 2 of them were closed from the factory. You could hear the bike smooth out at idle as he was adjusting them. Problem solved

I also added the Yosh TRC slip-on and PCIII USB. I had a custom map made on an MJP brake dyno. The gains were very dramatic! It's a whole new bike. As far as low rpm performance - I picked up 5HP and 5ftlb's at 3500 rpm. Mine also had slight dips at 5000 and 6500rpm stock, which is now totally gone. At 5000rpm I gained 5HP-6ftlb's and at 6500rpm 10HP and 10ftlb's!!!
