i have heard very nasty horror sotries about riders in just jeans and a t shirt and dont want to have my skin scraped off the road.

basic equipment: helmet (~$300), jacket (~300), gloves (~$50-100), boots ($150-200), pants(~$200). You need to try on the stuff because different brands fit differently.

Ahhhhh yes I remember my first nike as well. I was about 5 or 6 years old and my father came home from working in the coal mines. He handed me the best pair of blue and white nikes you could imagine.

I was in 2nd grade; mine were what I thought was a pair Jordan 1's. Turns out they were really K-mart fuk flyaway knock-offs and I was clowned at school for the next three weeks. Good thing I embrassed our brokeness and love for all thing bootlegged, though, becuase until I became of working age I wore many a pair of *** Beebop's, and Converse8's. By the way I currently ride a Kazooki.

Come on guys the noob has a good question on a serious topic. Cut him some slack if he spelled something wrong. He seems to be on the right track as a new rider asking about protective gear.

I have also gotten some great deals at the end of the season i.e. last years close-outs, clearance, etc. Although, I guess that depends on where you live; I am "lucky" enough to live in an area w/ 4 seasons.

Dealers will also use eBay to clear out invetory. I check sometimes just to see and many times there are great buys to be had. Is an AGV sport Diablo 2 piece for $299.00 a good deal?

It can depend on what brands you're looking into and what's available to you locally. As a noob, you really should try on some gear to get an idea as to sizing as well as how it feel to move around in it. It will feel stiff - especially if your only reference is wearing street clothes. And yes, wearing jeans is a sure recipe for lots of bandages, neosporin, pins, external fixators, etc...
Get new stuff. Don't rely on someone trying to pawn off their old gear on you to tell you that "it's as good as new". And, how much do you want to spend? Gear ranges in prices from cheap to *** But it's all relative. How much is the safety of your body worth to you? I personally won't compromise on gear and will spend major $$ to get well-known and reputable brands. As an example, I'll spend about $470 for a replica shoei X11, $200 for a pair of Kushitani or RS Taichi gloves, $1800 for a custom RS Taichi 1 piece race suit, $350 for Sidi Vertigo corsa boots, $180 on a Bohn backprotector, $.40 on a set of earplugs. And of course, I'm always buying more gear so it doesn't stop with just a single purchase. You can spend more if you wanted to; but you can spend way less also, especially with the modern-day convenience of online shopping. Look around - there's a lot of stuff available to the motorcyclist these days.

If you're looking for good deals on new stuff, try NewEnough.com. I recommend this only after tyring stuff on to see what kind of fit to expect. I found a Firstgear leather/textile jacket for $79 on there. Good luck in your quest, and welcome to the club.
