Hi Everybody. I use to be a car guy. Got a Fox mustang running 10.34 135mph. I got my liscence and i did take some safety class.
Anyway I want to know what bikes would you people choose consedering PERFORMANCE,FLICKABILITY,FUN As those Major Factors.
Do not consider INSURANCE or COST of the bike.
My choices are
GSX-R750 2000-2003 GSX-R1000 2001-2002 Yamaha R1 2002-2003 Kawasaki ZX636 2003-2004 Honda CBR600RR 2003-2004 Yamaha R6 2003+
I heard The Gixxer are in another category,They are faster than the other bikes and are more Race Oriented.
Thank you

None of those are good first bikes. You can use the search function to find the several (atleast) threads that talk about good first bikes and new riders. I'd highly suggest getting a used SV650 to learn on, nobody learns to fly in a fighter jet or commercial airliner.

None of the above. EX500 GS500 SV650
Dont commit suicide on a 150 hp race replica for first bike.

First off, I will say that the GSX-R'S are no different than any other bikes in their class. Atleast no real noticable difference, especially for new riders. Second, you can cross off the first three bikes off your list, def not good first time bikes. A lot of people will tell you that these new 600's are too much for new riders, and part of it's true. Don't think they won't have you scared sh!tless just because they're 600's, they def will, I rode my R6 for a year and a half and it still scared the crap out of me. But the 600 is not gonna be too much to handle I don't think. Depends, comin up, did you ride dirtbikes, quads what not? I used to ride around with my dad on his cruisers for about 2 years before I got my R6. I don't know, the sv650 is a great starter bike, but I think sooner than later you will want to replace it with one of the race replicas. But you said don't consider the money so maybe you will be able to afford another one in the near future. But I would say go with the R6 either 2003 or 2004. They are great bikes-that's what I learned to ride a sportbike on-and if you're worried about gixxers, I killed my fair share of gixxers with mine, but you shouldn't really be thinking about all that right off the bat. Def no more than the 600 though.

The bike I ride every day now is a 1998 Triumph Speed Triple. It's my 6th motorcycle, but my first sportbike. I'll never go back to cruisers again, that's for sure. But now that I'm dragging pegs on the Triple, what's next? The 2005 ZX6R and the 04-05 R1 are the only two bikes that really interest me. I live on a super twisty mountain road that I ride twice a day, and I think that the 636 will give me everything I want from a bike (will it wheelie off the throttle?) but I worry that if I get the 636, then I'll still want the R1. But I don't know if the R1 is practical for my riding style, or if it will be as good as the 6R in the kind of curves that I encounter. Man, I don't know. I can't make my mind up about what I want either. What's a good second sportbike?

POS GS500? Bored of an SV650? This ought to be good, keep us infomed of your adventures. You are definately in the right frame of mind for this.
BTW, if you use an Uzi instead of a .22 long rifle it makes you a better shot.

I own an '04 636 now and have owned a '98 ZX-9R, a 2003 Z1000 and used a '99 R1 for sole transportation for about 6 months. The most fun, by far, has been the 636. The light weight and handling outweigh the raw power of the big bikes...to me. I work at a bike shop and get the opportunity to ride all the new bikes. The new liter bikes are intoxicating with their power, but it's simply overkill in most situations. I do several track days a year, it's surprising how many liter bikes blast away in the straights and hold everybody up in the corners. They are just a lot to handle, you have to be ultra smooth to make them fast and exploit thier power. I find it's more fun on the 600, especially in the twisty bits like you describe. I think you'll be plenty happy on the 600 as long as your ego and what your friends get, doesn't get in the way. In recent years I've shifted more toward riding for myself, instead of riding image. I didn't even realize that's what I was doing, since then I've been moving toward smaller, more menueverable bikes. Of all the '05 bikes I rode last year, the DRZ400SM put the biggest smile on my face...the second was an SV650S.

well if you had 5 months like you say on the 636, i would say don't even worry about what these guys say, any of those 600's would be perfect, especially seein as the 636 is quite a bit more powerful then all of them as far as 600's go. You should be fine, goodluck

Thanks Bill, I appreciate the response. I figured the Ninja is really the right answer for me. I like to throw down on the tight stuff and ride sane everywhere else. I've got a smooth right hand (I think) but I don't know if it's smooth enough for a literbike on a Western NC road, especially the way I like to hammer out of switchbacks. The only thing that keeps me from forgetting about the R1 is that, well , it looks so freakin' sharp, and the thought of being able to do stand-ups in 3rd (I know that shouldn't be a factor, but it is. I can only get the Triple up if I clutch it in first, and that's frustrating sometimes.) But in the end, I'll probably go with the 636. I've got all winter to think about it.

well it's not really that you'll be bored or anything on it, trust me you can have just as much fun, but you will want something more, that's just how people are

I know what you mean, my friend. I've said more than once that the Speed Triple is the perfect bike for me right now, is not weak by any means, but still seems lacking compared to other bikes out there. It corners great and has plenty of clearance, and I think I made a good choice for a first sportbike. So why why do I want something else? Because that's just how we are, like you said....

Casey,
Almost forgot. The 636 will come up without the clutch in first, and also in second if you get it just right. I'm not big into wheelies, so no big deal for me. The 1000's are stupid easy to wheelie. I even got a small power wheelie out of a Gixxer in 4th. Your best bet is to see if you can score a ride on one. I think you'll be surprised how good the 636 is. Also, since you like the R1, why not consider an R6 as well.
