You dont have to shift out of 6th to pass on any liter bike.

Yes I've ridden GSXR1000s and R1s before, I'm still going to downshift.  I never said you "have to", heck you can pass a motorhome in 6th gear on a EX250 if you really want to....

lol yup your just gonna take forever to pick up speed. litre bikes usualy have pretty good pull in 6th gear at freeway speeds though is my point.

Looking at my new avatar that Trevitt was nice enough to hook me up with, you'd definately want to downshift from 6th to pass a motorhome on a RC51...unless the motorhome is doing 80mph or faster (CRAZY tall gearing).  I've ridden an '04 R1 with stock gearing but never put it in 6th, IF 6th is geared as tall as 1st (or as tall as those RC51s) I think most of you would want to downshift too.  I could DEFINATELY feel the difference in midrange pull between the '03 GSXR1K I've ridden and that '04 R1.

well since the post lost its meaning anyways im gonna put this here. i just laughed my ass off soo hard. check out the san fransisco craiglist. theres a add for a 1999 "r7". first off the bike is an east coast bike. the owner has a site on r1 to r71 conversions. so it for sale in sf is unlikely. 2nd the asking price is 15000. 3rd in the add hes referring to it as a true r7 and he says in the add "with r1 motor in it". ok say if it really is his bike. hes the stupidest person alive. taking an r7 motor out to replace it with a r1. but luckily it is a scam. so no real r7 motor was tossed. still funny as hell though. oh yea the pics are taken directly from that guys site too. dumb scammers

That's a negative.  I had a Ninja 250 and you ain't passing anyone in 6th gear on a two-lane road unless they are going about 50mph and you both are going down hill.  I translate "if you want to" as anytime, anywhere.

The Gixxer 1000 ('03 at least) has enough midrange torque that I can go down to about 25mph in 6th gear and STILL pull away from anything on the road.

The new '05 Gixxer may be geared taller--I don't know never ridden one.  I know it certainly has more power than mine.

The '03 is perfectly geared in my opinion.  Top of 1st gear is about 82mph, not 100ish like the ZX-10R and R1.

I used to drop down to 4th a lot, but then I found out that by the time it takes me to snick down 2 gears and go WOT I could already be there just going WOT in 6th.

bleedgreen, my favorite are the guys who know someone who had a CBR750 or GSXR900.

Zyglob don't think about it too much, if the motorhomes going 150mph or 10mph ofcourse a ninja250 won't be able to pass it in 6th gear...I wasn't trying to cover every scenerio imaginable, just "in general."

Look at the sales figures to answer your question. In most

cases, the 'Race Replica' machines out-sell the re-tuned

Sport Touring  machines. That could change with new or up-

dated models and better product promotion.

Some current examples from Kawasaki:

ZZR-600

ZZR-1200

Both are re-tuned for mid-range power.

Both need up-dated brakes, fueling and suspension.

Is more power better? Yes, more power in the low, mid and

top end; oh, I already own a ZX-12R...

By the way, you get some free stuff when you by a Buell-

chromed wallet chain or a stylish 'Man purse' with chromed

latch... cool

And just to return to a piece of the original topic and to answer a question posed...Would anyone buy a lower performance bike for the 'real world'???? With torque available down low and midrange where you need it in traffic, yeah, I would. And a lot of other people would too. The bike is what is perhaps one of the best bikes for all round riding on the planet, preferred over many more expensive bikes just because it works. The bike is our good friend, the Suzuki DL650. Probably worldwide more of these have been ridden over more miles than any other bike on the planet. A humble V-twin with a 10.5k redline and boatloads of torque...the curve is practically flat from 3500 to redline. Maybe the bike won't handle as well as some of the 'preferred' models, but its still quicker than your father's oldsmobile....and remember now, we are talking about riding responsibly on the street...just how much power do you really NEED? Certainly no more than the SV650/DL650.

And another thing, that is why most dealers can't keep these two bikes in stock...they are so popular they sell out quickly. And there is a reason for that. They are a damn good bike and are adaptable to a variety of riding situations. Great touring bike, good commuter bike, good for limited off road use and probably with the right tires and the right rider would hold their own with the local sportbike group.
