A new rider posted and implied that if he or she starts riding then its only a matter of time before he wrecks, and also that injury is sure to follow. The saying that there are ONLY two kinds of riders, those that HAVE already fallen or those that WILL fall, is without a doubt false! Yes the chances of "tipping over" goes with the territory, but to generalize and say that its bound to happen is simply wrong. We as motorcyclists have many resources these days especially when it comes to proper knowledge, gear or safety courses-that kinda stuff. This wasn't the case back in the day when the "saying" came about. So that said, in the day of hard-tails, spoked rims, and dirt roads the "saying" may have been a bit more relative but ultimately it really boils down to minimizing the threat. The great "thing" about motorcycling is the freedom and control, you simply can't have one without the other. Take the right approach with an open mind and check your ego every so often and you'll have many years of great riding experiences, and along the way meet like-minded people that share "the passion". Motorcycles keep you honest and that's why true enthusiasts are hard-core. Rubber side down, shiny side up and happy trails!

True, no excuses for a 'solo crash'- but in review of my
riding incidents of last week, it is the stupid people we
share the road with that may prove "there are ONLY two
kinds of riders, those that HAVE already fallen or those
that WILL fall..." to be true.

Over 40,000 miles and counting on two different bikes and still haven't gone down. Key point is definitely checking ego at the door. Not to say there haven't been some close calls with all the "stupid" people out there. I drive a UPS truck for a living and being on the road all day I see many things that would make your hair curl. As a result you start to recognize tendencies in other drivers and it helps you read what they're going to do before they do it. Glad to be back on a bike again after 4 plus years off of one.

40,000...wish I could claim that. I know about how some "stupid drivers" act while in heavy traffic, sad really. Thanks to all of your co-horts in So. Cal. I'm a big fan of the "brown truck", just got some "swag" the other day courtesy of UPS, ya'll rock! SM

Yup.. its christmas every day at "big Brown".
mikoste, I would love to trade about 20,000 of those miles for a coupla days at a track. Having your job would be pretty cool sometimes. My first street bike was a '90 fzr400. IMO it was almost a perfect first bike to learn on. my new bike is an '05 cbr600rr. its just an amazing bike. makes the daily commute the hilite of the day. that is.. until i strap on the brown van and start drifting around all the country roads in San Luis county!

All I can say after 11 bikes and who knows how many miles over the last 20 or so years is Wear your safty equipment!!!!!!!!! Gloves, Boots(not tennis shoes that pop off) Helmet, No substitute for leather....... I see guys everyday running around in shorts and a t-shirt. No helmet. Just asking for it..Or helmet on the back of thier bike (No helmet Law here in SC) All the old sayings aside... if you are going to go down. Lessen the chance of injury or road burns
