Why do people remove one headlight on their bike?  I've noticed this alot lately, and I havn't been able to figure out why people do it.  Is it for looks?

I'd also like to know why people do this.

They haven't "removed" the headlight. By design, only one of the units are on in low beam.

This is perhaps in homage to the motorcycles that run in endurance racing. These bikes run 8, 12 and even 24 hours and require lights for the nighttime hours and they run a single headlamp. If you are one of the Big Four Japanese brands, the annual Suzuka 8 Hour is a fight for corporate honor, glory and bragging rights.

It's not that they're removing one bulb, it's that they're running on low beams.  On some modern sport bikes, low beams only illuminate one side, whereas switching to high beams illuminates both sides.

ahh ok, thanks for the explanation.  i have a friend that removed a bulb in his atv (Honda TRX450R), i guess he thought it was cool and saw it on the street bikes.  i never would have thought the lowbeam is 1 light....  thanks.

Thanks for clearing this up guys, really makes me look retarded for asking. Hehehe

Last bike I had was a 98 CBR600F3 that didn't do the "one light low beam"

No worries. To question is to take the first step towards greater knowledge.

Cheers.

I wondered, too, till I asked...or read it somewhere, I can't remember.

Also, some folks replace one side of their beams to be a yellow lamp instead of the standard white light.  They think that it shouts, "I'm a motorcycle! Get out the way!" to the drivers who see it coming up in their rear view mirrors.  I don't know if it works, but if it does, more power to 'em.  I can't decide if I like the yellow/white look, though.

That's because the F3 only had a single bulb and reflector housing for both high and low beam. All the newer bikes use a separate bulb and reflector assembly for low and high beams, as they are able to get a better beam pattern with the brighter H6 bulbs, which are also more reliable than the old dual-filament H4 bulbs.

Call me stupid, but I dont get that at all /\. On my Lakota, I think its better to keep both headlights on the ATV for increased visibility. Taking one off doesn't really accomplish anything and kinda makes the ATV look weird. Someone seeing an ATV goin by with 1 light on is going to think "Gee, he must have burned a bulb out" and not thinking "Man that totally looks sick with 1 light, like a streetbike!" But, unless he's not doing tight trails and just fireroading it in wide open spaces, I guess hes safe then....
