Geared Up?

It has been rather warm in my neck of the woods lately and I noticed an alarming trend...a lot of riders are not wearing much gear.  I counted 8 sportbikers in t-shirts/cutoff shirts, shorts, and sandles.  HMMMM?  Yes they are wearing helmets, its the law, but I guess they do not value their skin.

Anything can happen at any time.  I rode like that twice before to go down to the beach, only a 15 minute ride, but stopped because I had a close call (car pulled out in front of me).

Maybe they don't care or someone has not showed them certain gear.  Get some vented gloves, a mesh textile jacket, and some jeans.  The wind will cool you while you ride.  Just bring a bag with shorts, sandals, etc.  I hope they don't have to learn the hard way.

None of them have been in the ER to watch another guy get the gravel/glass/general road crap picked out of their roadrash either.

I just saw a guy in shorts and no shoes, I've never seen the no shoes before. And I've seen chicks on the back in their thongs on the interstate many times, guys in tank tops too.

k guys...maybe you can help me out.  I just purchased my first sportbike and I am having trouble finding a jacket that will fit me and is suitable for the weather where I live.  I am in southcentral AL and it is HOT and humid here.  I see a million mesh jackets for men but not too many for  women .  I am tiny and nothing seems to fit.  Any ideas where I might find the gear that I need?

Congrats on your new purchase, that GSXR 600 should treat you well.

I have not seen too much that looks stylish and is funtional but here are some sites you can check.

http://www.alpinestars.com/_lp/moto_jackets_frst.htm

http://www.rideicon.com/FLASH_index.jsp

http://motorhelmets.com/htm1/apparel-street-jackets-alpinestars-mens-textile-table.htm

Alpinestars and Icon are definitely your best bet for quality, function, and style.  The third site lists the jackets made for women under brand names at the left of the page.  These sites also have vented gloves, boots, and pants for women.  I hope this helps you to find what your looking for.

I have to admit I'm guilty of wearing a t-shirt when riding lately. I live in NYC and its just hot and humid here and I have no idea how people wear jackets. I have a leather alpinestars for the cooler weather but I guess I've been lazy in buying a textile jacket. Its just hot as hell and I couldnt even imagine wearing something heavy in this weather. My helmet even pisses me off sometimes and it has vent holes but I take the visor off and wearsunglasses, that helps alittle. I know your right but sometimes its just impossible.

"I know your right but sometimes its just impossible."

I could tell you a story, as luck would have it, with a

happy ending - but I won't...

Please wear 'all' your gear, and re-afix your shield. All

it would take is one little chunk of road debris...

I wear just about whatever I want when I ride and have been doing that for better then 30 years without incident.  If I ride my ZX10 then I plan to break a few speeding laws and dress for the risk involved.  If I decide to ride my Triumph speedmaster then I dress causal except for my shoes.

It is good to try to influence younger Riders but most are aware of the hazards.

I appreciate your candor, Eddy.  But I don't think it is wise to ride w/o gear...we just know when lady luck will leave us.  Anyway, since you have been riding for 30 years, you are a seasoned rider.  I'm sure you have seen your share of mishaps & hopefully none of them were yours.  For the young/new and inexperienced riders reading this board, you should be promoting safety gear whenever they take to the road.  You should instill into them the brutal reality of gravel/road-rash.  (At the hospital, they use a stiff bristle brush to scrub into the open wound w/o antistetic.)
What's that?  Yes I always wear my gear (have been riding for 21 years).

Come on guys. Really is it that hot in NYC, what its in the 80's now.

I live in OK were its above 90 with at least 60-70% humidity for the entire summer. I went on a little solo ride on Sat, 92 degrees 60% humidity.

I was wearing my AGV TiTech, Joe Rocket leather replica jacket, gloves, jeans and boots.

Yeah its hot, but what is your life and safety worth? Mine is worth sweating a little. Drink a bottle of water everytime you stop for a break or gas and you won't dehydrate either.

I agree...it has been in the low 90's here with shirt soaking humidity levels and I still gear up.  I must say that I wish I had a good textile jacket instead of my leater jacket to help with ventilation but I still will not go out sans jacket.  I have a nice pair of vented gloves and my helmet does okay but I still sweat balls in town.  Thats why I try to ride the curves in the country.

I live in the deep south, it's hot and humid here all summer and I wear my gear every ride. When people ask, "How can you stand all that leather in this heat?" I reply, "I'll be glad I'm wearing it if I fall off." Which I haven't yet, knock on wood.
Just my two cents.

You guys are 100% correct!  Now lets seperate the talkers from the bull zhit artist.  Most states have mandatory helmet laws so why don't we start a petition to be sent to every governor and the congress demanding that it become LAW for all motorcycle riders to wear full leather suits,  boots and all of the gear that will protect the rider???  If they don't wear the leather etc then a $1000.00 fine will be imposed!

If my dad and mom weren't wearin helmets that one night 20 years ago when they crashed and spent few months in hospital, i and my brother wouldn't born. Helmet saved their lives. I don't think wearin helmet is that hard, it was over 100 here in Colorado on AMA Superbike race weekend and %90 of riders that i saw were wearin helmet.

Hey I am all for helmets and any state that does not require one should have the law changed because its ridiculous. Also it does get hot and humid as hell here in NYC and we dont have the luxury of all these great breezy curvy open roads with no traffic like good old Oklahoma or wherever some of you are from. I still love to ride though no matter where I am. Oh and requiring full leather suits for riding????? Come on, noone wants to get hurt but not your going alittle overboard with that suggestion.
