Chris...Your going to pay the big $ due to your age  (you know that).  When I was your age I paid cash or made a personal loan and bought my bike therefore allowing me to carry the min. insurance.

One thing to remember is that your insurance rates are now based on your credit score also.  I had one little "nasty" on mine due to an ongoing divorce and they wanted 1300/year for my new GSXR600.  I have a perfect record and I am 31 (but a girl).  I had my mom take out the policy in her name and assign me as an operator and I am only paying 300/year now.  It makes a big difference in AL, not sure if that info might help you.
Best of luck.

First off I'd highly recommend calling atleast 5 different insurance companies besides Progressive, they general suck ass for sportbikes and younger riders (under 25) anyway.  You maybe able to afford payments on a GSXR1K and get a loan on it, but what bout that 4k insurance...since it sounds like you haven't bought it yet?  Keep in mind the price of new gear if you need it, maintance, that thing is going to EAT through tires pretty dang bad, and as you know sportbike tires aren't cheap nor do they last long (relatively).  Is it worth it to pay that much, espcially if your loan has a ridiculous APR like a lot of young riders get sucked into?  You could look at trying to get a smaller loan on maybe a '01 R1 (it's still a freakin literbike) and try to pay it off that loan sooner, so you're only paying high priced full coverage insurance for maybe a year then just carry liability only (IF you have medical through someone else, IF something were to happen you don't want to be strapped with high medical bills for years on end.)

Well this is what I did. I found a 04 1K for $9400.00
I called a few dealers and asked about insurance companies they use. So I got one company that quoted me 2100.00 for full coverage for the year. Not bad considering what everyone else was quoting me. I also got approved for a personal loan on Saturday. So what I am doing is paying off the capital one loan in full and then droping the collision which will save me another $1000.00 per year. Thanks for all the help.

Its been a long time since I'v had time to get on the sportrider site and actually reply to something or ask someting because I'm in the same process your in bub. I'll let you in on a little secret.  Everyone on a sportbike in my area (central Kansas)  knows State Farm is the only insurance company you use.  They are the cheapest you can find.  My advice,  get a cheaper bike like the other guys said, that you can actually pay for.  Buy using payments your starting your future out the wrong way.  Or have mom pay for the bike then pay her back with payments, but be sure to tell her if you lay it down you will pay. Don't screw up your trust by screwing her if she does help you. Also if your a student have a good student discount, also have a good credit rating, if you have no credit get a card and make sure to pay your bills. Progressive and Geico are screwing riders with a dick big enough an elephant could feel it.  Why?  It costs money to advertise in every damn mag and all over TV.  Small local agents dont charg as much because they arn't paying millions for advertising.  I'm 18 with a cbr600rr. Liability only $200.  Why-- no accidents, good credit rating, good student discount, and the key--  I have my pickup under their insurance too.  this saved me 600 offf my motorcycle insurance. Good luck man  by the way get a 2003 CBR600RR  looks better than a gix and is 3500 cheaper.

I have to agree about Progressive and Geico.  My cars are insured with Progressive and they wanted 1661.00 a year to insure my new motorcycle.
State Farm kicks ass when it comes to insuring motorcycles.

I'm currently paying $500 bucks a year for full coverage  through State Farm, I'm 26 with an OK driving record. Have you checked with State Farm?

Dont know if it will be the same in NY but i live in PA and pay $355 a year full coverage on my brand new ZX-6R. I go through Liberty Mutual. I know it not a litre bike but I'm only 22 and that is really cheap for my age.

Holy crap...well, I'm in Albany and using Statefarm and I pay about $250/year. But, I only carry liability and comprehensive (in case the bike is stolen). This will usually appease your lien holder's policy on full coverage insurance. I also have a car on the policy as well...I don't know how much difference that makes. Lol...I also have a ton of moving violations, so the deal is out there! Definitely call your State Farm agent asap.
