Derbi's are just being imported into Canada this year and I wanted to know if anyone has any info on the quality and durability of these machines.I know they're from Spain and they race in 125GP but not alot about how good they actually are. Any input ??

They make some kick ass fun to ride scooters...

They don't have any decent sized street motorcycles. And no, a 50-cc 2-stroke (their R1GPR) is not a street motorcycle. Especially when it's nearly the same price as a 650cc SV650...

The above is a recent user review-notice the review of a

CBR 400RR

I was researching the Derbi last fall, but the price point

did not make sense; can get a Ninja 250/500, GS 500 etc.,

for the same or a little more.

Hmm, I've looked for info on the newer Derbi GPR50 before....

I don't see why it wouldn't be street legal in the US as Aprilia has been selling (and still currently does) their RS50, a two-stroke 50cc street legal "Scooter/motorcycle."  50cc two strokes are still street legal, it's just they can't sell any new street legal two strokes that have more than 50cc.  As for the price, I don't know.  Scootershop.com has the naked version of Derbi's new GPR50 listed at $3,595, the old GPR50 at $3,549 and the new non-street legal GPR80 cup at $4,500.  So I'd guess it could be as cheap as $3,600 or at the most $4,500.  From what I read on Derbi GPR message boards a while back, it's fairly easy and common for people to up these 50s to 75-80cc machines by getting a new cylinder etc (but keeping the bottom end).  This new GPR50 is based of a GPR125 sold in europe so the frame is built for 125cc, so if you're a little more mechanically inclinded it's possible to put a 125cc motor into this new frame, but you'll need more than just a new cylinder as the 50cc motors bottom end isn't large enough or strong enough for 125cc.  You also will probably need an upgrade clutch.  I am not an expert on them, this is just what I remember reading on 1 or 2 Derbi message boards several months ago.

The R2 GPR 125 is going to be available here(Canada) next month , for around the same price as a Ninja 250.

R6Dave, do you know why there is no more Kawasaki 250r in canada?  There seems to be just the sport-touring ZZ-R250, which is almost the same price as the 500r! What happened?

The Kawasaki EX250R Ninja has been the same forever. They changed some stuff like body style and updated some parts but it's the same bike. The EX 500 is way better unless you're 5 foot nothing. The price thing is messed-up.Why would anyone buy the 250?I'll pay that much for something exotic (Cagiva Mito 125, Aprilia RS125-250) but a Ninja 250? Nope.I test rode one for my girlfriend and was not impressed. It would make a good first bike for a small person though.Sorry , to answer your question though, the 250 Ninja ,wheather it be named EX or ZZ-R or Ninja 250R or 250RR or EX-ZZ-R 250R Type R....is the same bike.
