I want to start off with a gixxer R600, but i know thats probably too much power for a first bike. So any suggestions for a first bike. I've been looking at the 250r.

sv650,  great for beginners and expierienced riders alike.  If you have to have a full faired bike the f4i or the yzf 600r would be my choice.  There really isn't that big a difference in quarter mile times and they are a heck of a lot more comfortable.

I like the bigger bikes, and the yzf 600r is a great bike, but I will probably just get a used 250r or something in that range.  Keep that for 6-8 months then I'll get something that is of higher power(gixxer R600).  I would like to have the gixxer as my first bike but its not really a good idea.

There is a big difference between a 250 and a 600.  Whatever you decide to do,  use you'r head.  Places like argo cycle have lots of stock for a reason.

Is this your first motorcycle-period, or your first sportbike or what?  Just curious what your experience level is.  If it's your first motorcycle or first sportbike you should stay away from a 1000cc bike, you won't really enjoy it.  Give us some more information and we can go from there.

I started with a Kawasaki Concourse as a return to motorcycling. It has had it's good and bad moments. My plan is to do raod trips this summer, so a fairing was required. my father was a rider and showed me few things, but he was not a teacher of riding.

I dropped the bike on my first ride ..... I forgot to use the front brake, killed the engine when I locked up the rear brake, and slid to a stop with my foot still on the brake. My truck experience saved me from falling in the lane, I had an escape route in mind, and turned the fron tire toward it and slid into the median. I did not have to make that decision, it was part of what I do when I drive.

The police officer following my son thought he hit me, I explained to the officer who came up beside me what happened and he asked if "I knew what that lever across from the clutch was". I said I did, he said to start using it and gave me a fingers down welcome and a smile as he drove away. He is a MC policeman in the summetime.

That was my only contact with law enforcement on the bike. I spent time in a large parking lot learning low speed basics, then turned out the drive and have not looked back.

My first bike was a Yamaha 650 twin that I rode on gravel roads and highways to work for several years.

I would not recommend a literbike to a new rider either, but it worked for me. I never ride without helmet, leather jacket, hard shell jeans, chaps when I can afford them, and the idea that I am completely responsible for my own safety, not the people around me. The last is almost jore important than a helmet, but it is no replacement for one.

I did long haul, my last 3 trucks had 500 and some horsepower. It helped to have that much experience with high horse machinery before I got up on two wheels. See ya in Fayetteville AR, at Bikes, Blues, and BBQ fall of 2007, ok.
